As someone who grew up with the iconic duo of Master Chief and Indiana Jones gracing my television screen, I must admit that the recent news about Microsoft’s openness to multiplatform releases has left me both intrigued and a tad skeptical.
This year, several significant Microsoft-produced games like “Sea of Thieves”, “Hi-Fi Rush”, “Pentiment”, “Grounded”, and not forgetting “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” have been launched on competitive platforms other than Xbox, such as PlayStation, Switch, or even both. It’s evident that this strategy has been fruitful since the company has repeatedly expressed its intent to continue releasing games in a similar manner in the future.
During a conversation with Bloomberg, Phil Spencer, head of gaming at Microsoft, reinforced his stance, implying that they don’t have any exclusive first-party games that they would refuse to make available on PlayStation and Nintendo platforms.
“I do not see sort of red lines in our portfolio that say ‘thou must not,’” Spencer said.
It’s worth noting that Spencer has mentioned there hasn’t been any decision made about the next Halo game just yet. Contrary to some reports, it’s suggested that a remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved could potentially be underway and might be aimed for a launch on PS5.
At present, two Xbox exclusive games, namely “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” and “DOOM: The Dark Ages”, are slated for release on multiple platforms in 2025. Additionally, next year’s “Call of Duty” is also planned to be available across various platforms.
