As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that LEGO Horizon Adventures has managed to bring a fresh twist to the classic LEGO games we all love. Unlike its predecessors, this game doesn’t offer any shortcuts for unlocking characters, which, while initially frustrating, adds a sense of achievement when you finally collect them all.
With the release of LEGO Horizon Adventures, I find myself drawn to the challenge of uncovering every playable character hidden within this vibrant world. And wouldn’t you know it? There’s even a trophy up for grabs once you’ve managed to unlock them all!
In contrast to traditional LEGO games featuring Star Wars, Marvel, and Harry Potter, which typically allow easy access to characters via cheat codes, LEGO Horizon Adventures does not provide any such simplified methods for unlocking characters.
Handily, the game is quite short, so it won’t take you long to collect all the characters.

How to unlock characters in LEGO Horizon Adventures
There are four characters in total, and you unlock them all by progressing through the main story.
In simpler terms, towards the beginning stages of the game, Erend is discovered on a frozen planet, which happens to be the second world you explore, avoiding excessive spoilers about later events.
In addition to her adventures, Aloy also enjoys the perk of unlocking a variety of customizable costumes as she progresses.
All playable characters in LEGO Horizon Adventures
The four playable characters in LEGO Horizon Adventures are Aloy, Varl, Teersa and Erend.
Not much separates them, other than what attacks they use. To break it down:
- Aloy uses a bow and arrow
- Varl uses a spear
- Teersa uses bombs
- Erend uses a warhammer
Among all the tools, Erend’s massive hammer resembling an axe is undoubtedly my preferred one, offering a classic, impactful bashing sensation reminiscent of an action game.
In a nutshell, when you’re playing alone, Aloy remains the central figure throughout the game. She appears in every cut scene regardless of who you’re controlling at that moment.
Regardless of the character you select, you’ll discover that each possesses unique enhancements exclusively available from a mysterious merchant.
How to swap characters in LEGO Horizon Adventures
There are two methods to swap characters in LEGO Horizon Adventures:
During breaks from your missions, you can locate them in Mother’s Hope (a place where you return between missions), and exchange them yourself manually.
At the outset of the mission, you’ll find all the characters assembled. You’re free to pick the one you prefer.
In Mother’s Hope, upon your arrival, you’ll encounter Varl close to your initial location. You’ll also find Teersa in the icy terrain, while Erend is situated near the large doughnut monument close to the dining hall.
