Bewitched

Hey there! You know that cool animated character, a dark-haired witch gliding on a broomstick under the moonlight? It’s probably meant to be Agatha, but it’s a clear nod to the classic TV show, ‘Bewitched’. This series ran on ABC from September 17, 1964, to March 25, 1972. It was all about a witch who opted for an ordinary life with her human husband in the suburbs, even though her family wasn’t too thrilled about it. As you might guess, there were plenty of funny situations! Fun fact: ‘WandaVision’ also paid tribute to ‘Bewitched’.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

In the credits, the character portrayed as a witch who follows the first one referenced is known as the Evil Queen from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” often depicted as her witch form, or the “old hag.” This nod not only acknowledges Disney’s rich history, as Snow White is a well-loved animated classic, but also reflects the common portrayal of witches in many stories: old, ominous, eerie, sometimes with warts, and associated with malevolent actions like poisoning apples or eating babies. As Lilia, played by Patti LuPone, puts it. Additionally, in the credits clip, the witch seems to be entering a hidden space below a heavy door in the floor, which could be seen as an homage to the Witches’ Road.

The Wizard of Oz

In a nod to the classic tale, I’m referring not directly to a real-life witch, but to the enchanting story of “The Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. More specifically, it’s about Dorothy Gale’s encounter with the Cowardly Lion, a scene straight out of his book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Interestingly, this reference to “The Wizard of Oz” appears twice in the credits. Towards the end, you’ll notice a figurine adorned in black witch garb and green skin, a fitting description for the infamous Wicked Witch of the West.

The Simpsons

In an unexpected twist, we find Lisa Simpson appearing as a witch in the closing credits. This could be from the “Treehouse of Horror XIX” episode given that Lisa dons a witch costume for Halloween in this particular installment. However, it’s worth noting that The Simpsons has delved into themes of witchcraft and Wicca throughout its long-running series.

The Craft

Back when I was checking out the credits of the game, I couldn’t help but notice a quick nod to the 1996 movie “The Craft.” It’s the only live-action clip in the credits that seems to be lifted straight from another entertainment work, and it’s all about that unforgettable scene where Nancy (played by Fairuza Balk) unleashes her witchy powers on Chris (Skeet Ulrich), and let me tell you, those boot tips are unmistakable.

Agatha All Along is now streaming on Disney+. New episodes arrive on Wednesdays.
