Alma’s Not Normal season 2 air date confirmed in trailer as Sophie Willan returns

As a longtime fan of British sitcoms and a connoisseur of the witty and eccentric, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the imminent return of Alma Not Normal! With its clever writing, relatable characters, and a dash of Boltonian charm, it’s become one of my favorite shows.

Exciting news for fans of Sophie Willan’s popular sitcom Alma Not Normal! The anticipated comeback of the series is just around the corner, happening in about 14 days.

The BBC announced that the series returns for its second season starting on Monday, 7th October. You can stream all episodes at once on BBC iPlayer from that day, or catch it weekly on BBC Two.

As a passionate cinephile, I was thrilled to learn about the upcoming film, as evidenced by the fresh trailer that dropped recently. The catchy tune of Blondie’s Atomic set the stage for this exciting announcement, and it all kicked off with my favorite character, Alma (played by Willan), saying, “Bolton, darling, I’m back!

Afterward, she states: “Simply returning doesn’t imply moving backward,” prior to disclosing her ambition to launch a career in stand-up comedy.

She mentions during her comedy performance that she hails from a family of unique women from Bolton, followed by scenes featuring Siobhan Finneran reprising her role as Alma’s mother Lin and Lorraine Ashbourne portraying her grandmother Joan.

In addition, you’ll notice Alma’s friend Leanne, portrayed by Jayde Adams, appearing early on in the 30-second preview. You can find the complete version linked below:

In a chat on The Guilty Feminist podcast, hosted by Deborah Frances-White, Willan revealed that the second season marks the end of the series, but hinted at an extra holiday-themed episode as a special treat.

She mentioned that she’s working on a special episode for Christmas, as it has been scripted by commission. However, she’s not interested in creating another series. Instead, she wants to bring closure to the storyline. The character she once played is no longer the central figure in a situational comedy.

“They have to not learn, that’s the point. She’s Del Boy at the end when he gets boring and rich.”

Additionally, it was announced that Steve Pemberton, who previously worked with her as a fellow panelist on Taskmaster Season 17, has joined the cast for the upcoming second season of Inside No 9. In the upcoming series, he will portray Joan’s brother.

2021 marked the debut of Alma’s Not Normal, which garnered outstanding feedback. During the BAFTA TV Awards, Willan was awarded the title for Best Female Comedy Performance and the series was recognized in the category of Best Scripted Comedy, where it was also nominated.

Alma’s Not Normal Series 2 is available from Monday 7th October on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
