Almodóvar ERUPTS Over Hunter Schafer’s Passport Nightmare!

Pedro Almodóvar, known for his 1987 film Law of Desire which showcased a trans character and a trans actor, has expressed strong indignation regarding the treatment of trans individuals in the United States. He passionately addressed this matter during his acceptance speech for the Chaplin Award for Film at the Lincoln Center in New York City.

Almodóvar’s speech mainly revolved around the risks posed by Donald Trump, along with the specific struggles faced by trans actress Hunter Schafer, notably from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Euphoria. Unfortunately, she is currently being compelled to use a passport that identifies her gender as male.

Pedro Almodóvar did not mince words when discussing the political climate in the United States. “There have been instances where I questioned whether it was fitting to receive [the Chaplin award],” the director expressed, through a statement. “I have questioned if it was suitable to come to a nation governed by an egotistical, authoritarian madman who disregards human rights and seems impervious to anything that might slow him down in his pursuit of altering the delicate global balance.”

He continued, “Hunter Schafer, an outstanding co-star alongside Zendaya in Euphoria, identifies as a woman, despite having been assigned male at birth during passport renewal. The restrictive viewpoint by Trump’s administration that there are only two genders does not define or alter the essence of human identity and its complex sexuality.

Schafer broke the news that she had received her passport when it came through. She expressed surprise because she didn’t expect it to actually occur.‘I can’t help but acknowledge my privilege as a celebrity trans woman who is white, thin, and conforms to current beauty standards – even with this privilege, the event still took place,’ she stated. Although trans rights have been diminishing in the USA and UK, it’s encouraging to see that the entertainment industry isn’t staying silent on the matter.

Almodóvar Isn’t The Only Person Outspoken About Trans Rights

Beyond Pedro Almodóvar, many voices have expressed support for transgender rights, and another notable Pedro, actor Pedro Pascal, has joined the conversation. Pascal, whose sister is transgender, recently shared on his platform, “I can’t conceive of anything more contemptible, petty, and pitiful than intimidating the most marginalized community who ask for nothing but the right to exist.

Subsequently, he started donning T-shirts advocating for transgender individuals to express his disapproval towards the reversal of their rights, labeling it as “unjust and cowardly actions.

Bella Ramsey and Paapu Essiedu, known for their roles as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones and the new Snape in Harry Potter, respectively, have added their names to a letter advocating for transgender rights.
