Amazing Spider-Man: Zeb Wells' Penultimate Issue Is Spider-Man's "Most Brutal Fight"

As a seasoned comic book reader with memories of flipping through the pages of Spider-Man comics since I was just a young lad sneaking peeks at my older brother’s collection, let me tell you, these upcoming issues of Amazing Spider-Man have got me all worked up!

In the upcoming issue #59 of Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel promises that our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler will encounter his toughest battle yet. This intense confrontation is part of Zeb Wells’ penultimate installment, which will culminate with a special oversized 60th issue in October. The new adversary for Spider-Man is Lonnie Lincoln, also known as the cold-hearted gangster, Tombstone, who has taken over the criminal underworld.

In 2022, Nick Spencer’s tenure on the main Spider-Man series kicked off with Amazing Spider-Man #1. This storyline saw Tombstone and various New York crime bosses such as Hammerhead, Madame Masque, Mister Negative, Crime Master, Black Mariah, Diamondback, The Owl, and Wilson Fisk’s son, The Rose, vying for control after Daredevil dethroned Kingpin Fisk. Following a gang war between Tombstone and The Rose, the first arc of Spencer’s run ended with Spider-Man tricking New York’s criminal leaders into thinking he was collaborating with Tombstone to sabotage their illegal activities.

In issue #31 of Amazing Spider-Man (equivalent to legacy #925), the antagonist made a reappearance. This was during the time when Peter Parker’s friend and ex-roommate, Randy Robertson, was planning to marry Tombstone’s daughter, Janice Lincoln, who is also known as The Beetle. However, the wedding was postponed due to an assassination attempt on Tombstone that left him temporarily unconscious, causing a city-wide gang war in New York City.

Eventually, I uncovered Madame Masque’s scheme against Tombstone – she aimed to disrupt the underworld and seize power from Silvermane and her father, Count Nefaria, over the Maggia. Meanwhile, my dad took charge in Harlem, with his Syndicate enforcing a brutal rule that ignited a full-blown war. This conflict spread across the pages of various comics like Miles Morales: Spider-Man, Daredevil, Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu, Luke Cage, Spider-Woman, and Jackpot. The latest issue of Amazing Spider-Man (#44 in February) saw me teaming up with Tombstone, along with Luke Cage, She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, Miles Morales, Shang-Chi, Danny Rand, and Daredevil (Elektra), to form a temporary alliance against the gang war that almost claimed Randy’s life.

Following the discovery that Shotgun, the potential assassin, was collaborating with a government agency intent on eliminating Beetle and other New York gang leaders, Tombstone took action against Janice as Spider-Man triumphed over Madame Masque, effectively ending the gang war. In the subsequent power struggle, Tombstone’s Syndicate rose to prominence, with Tombstone publicly swearing to brutally defeat Spider-Man in daylight to ensure that other families would forget his alliance with Spider-Man during the conflict.

In the latest issue of The Amazing Spider-Man (#56 or #950), Spider-Man has been undermining Tombstone’s standing with other criminal groups to give the impression that his partnership with the new Kingpin is still intact. Following a foiled arms deal in Harlem by Spider-Man on behalf of his associate, Tombstone attempted to assassinate Peter Parker as a warning to Spidey. However, Peter managed to avoid this violent encounter by contacting his other superhero allies: She-Hulk, his attorney, and Mayor Luke Cage. In the end, it was Peter’s alter-ego who delivered the decisive blow, leading to Tombstone’s arrest as Spider-Man.

In the courtroom, Tombstone asserted her innocence, unaware that Janice had chosen to testify against her father as a witness. This tale unfolds in this month’s issue #57 and #58 of The Amazing Spider-Man, leading up to what is claimed to be the most brutal fight ever experienced by Spider-Man in issue #59, set for release in October. Wells concludes his tenure with a larger-than-life issue #60 of The Amazing Spider-Man, paving the way for Joe Kelly (known for Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII) to initiate the “8 Deaths of Spider-Man” series, featuring the new Sorcerer Supreme Doom and a magic-infused suit of armor designed by Ed McGuinness.
