Amazon Cancels Blue Protocol's Western Release, Discontinues Game

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say I’ve seen a fair share of twists and turns in the gaming industry. However, the recent turn of events regarding Blue Protocol has left me rather dumbfounded.

Amazon Games and Bandai Namco have called off the Western launch of Blue Protocol, as announced this week. The MMO, designed to immerse players in an anime universe, was initially released in Japan back in 2023, with plans for a Western release on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms by the end of this year. However, since those initial promises were made, there has been little to no news about Blue Protocol. Sadly, fans eagerly awaiting its arrival have now learned that the Western release has been canceled altogether.

It was revealed on the official website of Blue Protocol that the game will be ending, with specific dates given for both the English and Japanese versions. Unfortunately, due to the Japanese version’s closure on January 18th, it appears that the Western release of Blue Protocol will not proceed as planned.

Due to certain circumstances, the Blue Protocol team has decided not to proceed with the global release of the game in partnership with Amazon Games. They’ve shared a deep bond with Amazon Games during the development process, and it is regrettable that they won’t be able to share Blue Protocol with gamers worldwide as planned.

The creators of Blue Protocol subsequently expressed their apologies for the abrupt news regarding the game’s conclusion, despite the fact that there was no established Western release date that players had been anticipating.

“Ever since the initial reveal of Blue Protocol, there’s been a lot of excitement about the game. Our goal was to create an immersive experience akin to stepping into your favorite anime world, where every player could star as the protagonist. We’ve put in a tremendous amount of effort in preparation for its launch, but unfortunately, we won’t be able to offer a service that meets everyone’s expectations.”

It appears that the closure of Blue Protocol is part of a string of issues facing Amazon Games, following similar misfortunes for other games like Crucible. For instance, Crucible was introduced, returned to beta, and ultimately discontinued when it struggled to gain popularity. Moreover, an MMO based on The Lord of the Rings world was also in development by Amazon Games, but that project has been terminated as well.
