The abrupt termination of a popular young adult romantic fantasy trilogy project hasn’t fully processed yet, but it seems that Amazon is already scouting for its next big fantasy series in this genre. For now, Prime Video’s The Rings of Power continues to carry the high-budget fantasy torch for the streaming service, indicating that they have no intention of leaving the fantasy realm any time soon.
According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios plans to transform Lauren Roberts’ book series titled “Powerless” into a new television show. This project is being overseen by Daphne Ferraro, who was the original head writer at Maxon Hall. The trilogy includes the books “Powerless” (2023), “Reckless,” and “Fearless.” It’s said that the initial season will be based on the first novel in the series.
Recently, details about a new fantasy production underway at Amazon MGM Studios have been unveiled, which might stir excitement among fans of “The Wheel of Time” series, as they continue their efforts to revive the show through an intricate online campaign, despite its recent cancellation.
What is ‘Powerless’ About?
In the realm of Ilya, the Elites wield extraordinary powers and mercilessly pursue those without them. Paedyn Gray, an “Ordinary” with no powers, has spent her life eking out an existence as a thief in the slums, hiding in plain sight after the King had her father put to death. But when she rescues the King’s second son, she is unwillingly thrust into the Purging Trials, a competition offering wealth and recognition, yet also harboring danger. To complicate matters further, Paedyn and the King’s son find themselves inexplicably drawn to one another, their connection spelling disaster.
Fundamentally, the Powerless trilogy shares characteristics with numerous other fantasy series, chief among them being Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games – both of which have garnered massive success in their book versions as well as TV and film adaptations. Given this, it’s understandable that Amazon MGM would be keen to capitalize on the trend, particularly considering the original novel held the number one spot on the New York Times YA bestseller list for 19 weeks, won multiple awards, and gained widespread popularity on TikTok and YouTube.
Instead of focusing on continuing “The Wheel of Time” in a manner that would please its fans more, the streamer seems to have chosen to invest in “Powerless,” which is likely to come at a lower cost. Given that the reason cited for canceling “The Wheel of Time” was budget-related, it’s not hard to understand why “Powerless” might be seen as an acceptable replacement – even though fans of “The Wheel of Time” may not be in agreement.
