Jennifer Salke, who has been in charge of Amazon MGM Studios for a long time, is leaving her position as part of a significant reorganization among executives. Although Amazon claims this move was voluntary, the fact that her position has been eliminated and her responsibilities reassigned hints at a covert restructuring. This restructuring could potentially be linked to the expensive and contentious flops under Salke’s leadership, with “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” being one of the most notable examples.

The news arrived in a company memo from Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, who informed employees that Salke has chosen to embark on a new venture focused on production. As of now, her as-yet-unnamed production company will continue its association with Amazon through a first-look agreement for both movies and television series.
In my perspective, Amazon clarified that Salke won’t be stepping down but rather, they’re reorganizing the studio under a more streamlined leadership structure. Courtenay Valenti (our film head) and Vernon Sanders (our television head) will now report directly to Hopkins. Moreover, Sue Kroll maintains her position in marketing.
Hopkins stated that we’re making some adjustments to our leadership structure by eliminating the position of ‘Head of Studios.’ This change aligns with Amazon’s current efforts to simplify reporting hierarchies and expedite decision-making processes, which we believe is the optimal course for our studio.

The following statement is made amidst Amazon Studios grappling with the aftermath of their significant billion-dollar venture, “The Rings of Power,” an expensive TV production that holds the title as the most costly ever made. Initially hyped as Amazon’s counterpart to the popular “Game of Thrones,” the series has unfortunately seen a sharp drop in audience viewership and fan interaction.
Based on the Luminate TV and Film Report for 2024, the first season of “The Rings of Power” amassed almost 8 billion minutes viewed. However, by its second season, this figure dropped to roughly 3 billion – a significant 60% decrease. Additionally, an April 2023 report from The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that only about one-third (37%) of Season 1 viewers completed the entire season.

Despite these warning signs, Salke consistently maintained that the show was a success.
In a December 2023 interview, she asserted, “Since Season 2 premiered, over 55 million people have participated so far. From the perspective of this company, which considers such assets as long-term investments, this engagement with the franchise is a long-term commitment.
She mentioned, “More than 150 million people are tuning into and interacting with the program. Consequently, I’m feeling quite pleased. I believe we’re all in the same boat.
However, many critics and supporters argued that Amazon resorted to using ambiguous and exaggerated engagement figures to mask a significant drop in audience enthusiasm. Contrasting Nielsen’s and other third-party ratings data with Salke’s optimistic communication revealed a stark disparity. A once-respected endeavor for Amazon turned into a focal point of controversy, particularly after staff reductions affected Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.

In addition to facing questions during his tenure, Salke also attracted criticism from significant figures in the industry. During Amazon’s purchase of MGM in 2021, it was reported that Barbara Broccoli, a well-known James Bond producer, expressed displeasure about Salke’s role in discussions regarding the franchise’s future. Although she didn’t explicitly mention Salke, Broccoli made a pointed comment to The Guardian.
She stated that we won’t produce a Bond movie unless we can truly be proud of it. We’ll make the film when it’s ready, and I believe Bond isn’t just content; it’s a cinematic adventure. That’s our approach. We won’t be pressured into anything by those who simply want to fill gaps in their programming.
For several weeks, there were whispers that Broccoli took offense when Salke privately labeled Bond as “content” backstage. Some people believe this remark may have been connected to a rumored altercation about it.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I can’t help but see the uncanny foresight in Broccoli standing up to those temporary studio bosses back then. It was almost like he knew they were just caretakers of our beloved franchises, a role that history has since bared out to be all too true.

Regardless of the ongoing debate, Salke’s advocates reference her recent hits such as Reacher, Fallout, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith as proof of her thriving career. In his message, Hopkins commended her management skills and emphasized an impressive lineup of future projects.
Her vision, ingenuity, and connections within the industry were (and still are) evident… Shows such as “The Rings of Power,” “Fallout,” “Reacher,” “Saltburn,” and others, which she oversaw, have sparked significant cultural discussions and provided exceptional storytelling.
Despite the controversy surrounding “The Rings of Power” due to its departures from Tolkien’s original work, its character arcs heavily influenced by DEI (Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion), and a tone that sometimes feels inconsistent, numerous viewers interpret Salke’s decision to step down as a delayed reaction to the less-than-stellar outcomes of Amazon’s significant investment in this high-stakes project.

It appears that Amazon might be distancing itself from Jennifer Salke, as her departure from the leadership position and the removal of her role suggest. However, whether this change will bring about a fresh creative direction or more of the status quo is yet to be determined.
