Leah Shirley, Amber Portwood’s child, is openly discussing her choice to separate from her mother.
In a revealing episode of “Teen Mom: The Next Chapter” on May 22, the 16-year-old shared that she’s choosing to maintain some distance from her mother, due in part to Amber’s public comments about her. This has been an ongoing challenge for her, spanning many years and under the spotlight.
In simpler terms, Leah shared in a private moment that for quite some time, she’s been experiencing particular emotions. However, the final blow came when she saw her say something specific during her live streams. Not only did she mention Leah, but it was more than Leah could bear.
And the teen—whose dad is Gary Shirley—went on to express the sentiment to Amber.
In her message during that occasion, she expressed that what she was about to say shouldn’t be taken as harmful but rather as an act of honesty. For many years now, it has been her personal choice not to build a relationship with you and nobody else has influenced this decision. Lately, some online activities have made her feel the need to clarify this so that she can establish a boundary between us for her own well-being.
Despite feeling apprehensive about addressing Amber directly, Leah reflected that the most effective path towards forgiveness lay in her own ability to move past the incident.
In the course of discussing her decision with Gary and my stepmother, I, Kristina Shirley, who are blessed to be Emilee’s parents, sensed that Amber might find it tough to cope with this news. I mentioned that given Amber’s past experiences on 16 and Pregnant, she might have a specific emotional response, feeling perhaps a certain type of rejection.
Indeed, Amber did not take the message well.
Amber expressed her affection for a particular thing she receives from her daughter during an episode, after reading a text from a producer on-camera. Later, she addressed Leah directly, saying “Leah, please stop. You’re sixteen, so please stop. People notice your disrespect, and they also comment on it towards me. Please stop. You’re being impolite. There’s no need for rudeness.
She went on to say, “At this moment, you may not fully understand what you’re saying. Embrace your youth. Live as if you’re sixteen. Don’t get caught up in the tension between me and your father at such a young age.
This isn’t the first time that Leah has spoken out about her estranged mom in recent months.
Previously this year, it was explored how Amber, a mother of six-year-old son James with former partner Andrew Glennon, has struggled with abandonment due to her leaving her.
As I looked back on the March 27th episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, a chilling realization hit me – it wasn’t until I was between eight and ten years old that I truly noticed Amber’s absence. Despite my longing for her presence, the pain of abandonment lingers from that experience.
Leah added, “It’s just an internal feeling that I’m gonna have forever, probably.”
