Ambessa LoL: meet the newest champion

Ambessa LoL: meet the newest champion

As a seasoned League of Legends player with years of battleground experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Ambessa Medarda is set to shake things up in Valoran. Having watched her transformation from a mere character in Arcane to a playable champion, I’m thrilled to see how Riot Games has brought her brutal warlord persona to life within the game.

In a more conversational style, the latest League of Legends (LoL) character is Ambessa Medarda, who was initially introduced in Arcane. Three years have passed since then, and she’s now making her entrance into League of Legends.

Ambessa serves as the mother to Piltover’s city councilwoman, Mel Medarda. Contrasting with her daughter’s politically astute and fundamentally kind nature, Ambessa is a ruthless military commander wholly dedicated to the aggressive growth of the Noxian empire.

She will be available to play on Patch 14.22, expected to release on November 6, 2024.

Ambessa LoL ability rundown

Ambessa is a melee Attack Damage (AD) character who relies on Energy as her resource. Typically, she’ll find herself in the top lane, a common position for AD fighters or bruisers, but she might also excel in the jungle or mid lane. Her high mobility and Area of Effect (AoE) spells make her an effective skirmisher, capable of holding her own in battle.

Her Passive is Drakehound’s Step:

  • When Ambessa casts an ability, issuing a move or Attack order will cause her to dash after the Ability finishes. Casting an ability also gives Ambessa a charge, which increases her attack range and speed. Attacks consume a charge to deal additional damage and restore Energy.

Her Q is Cunning Sweep / Sundering Slam:

  • Ambessa sweeps her blades forward in a semi-circle, dealing extra damage to enemies at the edge. If you hit an enemy, it readies Sundering Slam.
  • On recast, Ambessa slams down her blades, dealing bonus damage to the first enemy hit.

Her W is Repudiation:

  • Ambessa gains a shield, braces herself, then slams the ground. If she braces herself from damage by an enemy champion, large monster, or structure, she does more damage with her slam.

Her E is Lacerate:

  • Ambessa whips her chains in a circle, damaging and briefly slowing enemies. Using Drakehound’s Step will trigger an additional strike.

Her R is Public Execution:

  • Passive: Ambessa gains Armor Penetration and her Abilities heal her.
  • Active: Ambessa becomes unstoppable and blinks to the farthest enemy champion in a line. She suppresses the target before slamming them for damage and a Stun.

Blood, Sweat and Tears: Arcane animated teaser

To promote Ambessa’s debut in the game, Riot Games released a music video.

Animated by Arcane studio Fortiche, this teaser is called Blood, Sweat and Tears.

This vividly symbolic and aesthetically pleasing trailer offers a kind of backstory for Ambessa Medarda, revealing her journey from conquering death to transforming into the warrior we know now.

In this animated video, a younger Ambessa is depicted, having been hurt and weakened following a fierce clash. Amidst fallen comrades, Ambessa embarks on a personal, spiritual quest to conquer the haunting reminders of mortality. The Lamb and Wolf of Kindred act as her mentors along this journey.

In addition to the music video showcasing this song, it subtly hints at an upcoming line of skins for the game, with this potentially being Ambessa’s first appearance as a playable character. The video also spotlights champions such as Pantheon, Swain, and Katarina as significant figures.

This teaser will also be pertinent for season two of Arcane, releasing November 9, 2024.

In the trailers for season two, Ambessa is seen adorned for battle. Following a minor part in the previous season, it seems her character will play a significant and decidedly conflict-driven role in the unfolding narrative, which ultimately determines the destiny of Piltover and Zaun.
