AMC’s Anne Rice Boss Seemingly Throws Shade At The Walking Dead When Discussing Spinoffs For Interview With A Vampire

The novel “Interview with the Vampire” has been cherished for years, and it has undergone various book-to-screen transformations. This includes the ongoing AMC TV series, which can be streamed using a Netflix subscription, and shows no signs of waning popularity. Recently, a producer associated with AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire” content subtly criticized “The Walking Dead” when discussing potential spin-offs.

The Walking Dead (TWD) created a massive impact upon its debut, and there are yet-to-be-released Walking Dead series and films in the works, even with the original show being off the air for some time now. In an interview with Deadline, network executive Mark Johnson was questioned about potential spinoffs for Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches. He simply answered, indicating whether they would indeed have spinoff shows or not.

As a devoted cinephile, I must clarify that I haven’t pondered over the idea of spinning off characters. This isn’t a critique of The Walking Dead, but rather an observation: if a character is viable for another universe or their own series, it suggests they haven’t been fully integrated into their original franchise. Take Lestat and Louie from Interview with the Vampire, for instance. Their uniqueness lies in their world and history within that story, making it challenging to imagine them outside of it. I haven’t even dabbled with the thought of, “This character is so successful, let’s give them their own spin-off.

It appears that Johnson is not planning to extend the Anne Rice AMC series in this fashion. Furthermore, he seems less than enthusiastic about the idea of spinoffs, viewing them primarily as a challenge for writers rather than a creative means to broaden the storyline.

Fans are eagerly anticipating a crossover between “Mayfair” and “Interview with the Vampire,” but it seems like spinoffs aren’t in the cards for now. Given the success of both shows, it appears that the network is prioritizing quality over quantity at this time. Therefore, we probably won’t see any minor characters getting their own series anytime soon.

2022 saw “Interview with the Vampire” as one of its standout TV shows, and its second season certainly delivered on intrigue. As for Season 3, details are scarce, but it appears that the narrative will shift from Louie to Lestat, a vampire who becomes a rock star after a major time leap. Frankly, the potential storylines seem endless.

Fans of The Walking Dead are aware that the series primarily survives today through spin-offs. Characters like Rick and Michonne, as well as Daryl Dixon, have their own shows now. However, the apocalyptic storyline doesn’t seem to captivate audiences as much as it used to, a predicament that Johnson appears to be working hard to prevent.

At this point, it’s uncertain when we can expect new seasons of “Mayfair Witches” and “Interview with the Vampire,” or if they will debut in the 2025 television season lineup. However, one fact that is certain is that spinoffs are not in the plans.
