Originally planned for reveal at CES 2025, AMD’s upcoming Radeon RX 9000 GPUs based on RDNA 4 architecture were unexpectedly withheld from the presentation, leaving enthusiasts of Team Red puzzled about the circumstances behind this decision.
Ever since the anticipated announcement about RDNA 4, there has been a flurry of leaks, whispers, and official comments coming directly from AMD executives. This week, we learned that the Radeon 9000 series cards won’t be hitting the market until March. Now, AMD’s VP and GM of Ryzen and Radeon, David McAfee, has taken to his platform (previously known as Twitter) once more to shed some light on this developing situation.
To Hardware Unboxed, McAfee has mentioned that they’re spending a bit more time fine-tuning their software layers for peak performance and adding support for up to four additional FSR 4 game titles.
I’m truly thrilled by your enthusiasm for RDNA4! Our primary goal is to create an exceptional lineup of products with the Radeon 9000 series. To achieve this, we’re dedicating a bit more time to finesse the software stack, aiming for top-notch performance. This extra effort also allows us to support more games utilizing FSR 4 technology. Furthermore, we have an extensive variety of…(January 22, 2025)
Improving RDNA 4 drivers for optimal performance is essential, as it will enhance the allure of AMD by offering better FidelityFX 4 (FSR) support in games. As a long-term AMD user, I’ve had to endure delayed, hasty, and subpar software on numerous occasions. It’s crucial that new users aren’t burdened with such issues.
With FidelityFX 4 shifting its upscaling method from traditional algorithms to machine learning (likely to match NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation), it’s crucial for AMD to make a successful debut, as this could divert focus from the impressive capabilities of Team Green.
McAfee’s reaction to Hardware Unboxed, where they expressed a favorable view on the delayed release, aligns with AMD’s presumed strategy. By canceling their CES presentation and gradually releasing information instead, they are effectively drawing focus back towards AMD, even as NVIDIA readies the launch of its upcoming RTX 5000 GPUs.
The star products, the RTX 5090 and its sibling RTX 5080, are scheduled to debut on January 30th. For insights into the buzz surrounding these cards, check out Windows Central Senior Editor Ben Wilson’s review of the NVIDIA RTX 5090. He labels it as “the world’s top consumer-grade graphics card,” but its starting price of $1,999 has many PC enthusiasts seeking graphics cards within a more budget-friendly range. It appears that AMD is aiming to cater to this market with its upcoming RDNA 4 cards.
Stock shortages could be NVIDIA’s downfall
In simpler terms, I (alongside many others) were given a press kit prior to the CES event containing some slides regarding RDNA 4. However, beyond a sneak peek at partner reference cards, an announcement for FSR, and a summary of the architecture’s enhancements such as next-gen AI accelerators, next-gen ray tracing accelerators, and optimized processing units, there wasn’t much detailed information provided.
Initially, I became excited about RDNA 4 after watching a video from Hardware Unboxed, which demonstrated how FSR 4 performs compared to FSR 3.1. In a separate post, I expressed my belief that the RTX 5070 was my next GPU before discovering AMD’s new technology. Based on the limited demonstration, it appears that AMD’s FSR 4 significantly improves background clarity and high-quality details in rapid scenes, which are typically diminished when using FSR 3.
It appears that AMD’s strategy to hold off on releasing their new graphics cards, such as the RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti, and 5070, until NVIDIA’s initial RTX 5000 series has settled is proving to be a shrewd move. According to Videocardz, who received information from Overclockers UK, a well-known PC hardware retailer, the supply of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 may only reach “single digits” and “few hundred,” respectively. Given Overclockers UK’s size, this suggests that these numbers might not improve significantly even if stock doubles in the coming week.
It was employee Andrew “Gibbo” Gibson of OC UK who alerted everyone about the stock shortage on the company’s discussion board, and in his post, he explicitly mentioned this issue.
Anticipated demand for our 40 series exceeds expectations, however, with its release happening just before Chinese New Year and numerous rumors circulating, initial stock supplies are scarce and may take some time to replenish. Consequently, the stock we do have will be offered through our webshop immediately upon launch, but I must warn you that it’s likely to sell out in a matter of seconds or minutes.
As a tech enthusiast, I can’t help but see the potential advantage that AMD might gain if NVIDIA truly encounters challenges in meeting demand. This extra time gives AMD an opportunity to refine its software, expand its FSR 4 offerings, and encourage board partners to churn out more GPUs. Some of these GPUs are already making their way into retailers’ hands, which could lead to a significant boost in sales for AMD if NVIDIA continues to face supply issues.
