Initially, it was planned for AMD and NVIDIA to unveil their upcoming lineups of graphic cards at CES 2025. However, things didn’t go as expected.
During NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s keynote address, he unveiled the exciting new RTX 5000 GPUs with enthusiasm. However, AMD abruptly decided to hold back details about their RDNA 4 news, such as the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 cards, from a separate presentation at the eleventh hour.
At such short notice, even the press kit I got prior to the event contained details about RDNA 4. After AMD’s CES presentation concluded, there were quite a few puzzled faces, wondering where the GPU data that had been shared beforehand had gone.
In the press kit for CES, AMD didn’t provide much new information. Only a handful of the six slides contained valuable details.
AMD has detailed its upcoming RDNA 4 architecture for Radeon 9000 GPUs. Key features include a 4nm process, advanced AI accelerators, enhanced ray tracing capabilities, and the latest AMD Radiance Display Engine. Additionally, we received news about FidelityFX Super Resolution 4, now powered by machine learning, a sneak peek at designs from AMD’s partner boards, and an explanation of the new naming strategy aimed at aligning better with AMD’s Ryzen CPUs as well as NVIDIA’s GPUs.
It seems that AMD decided not to reveal its RDNA 4 graphics cards during CES, but they assured Paul Alcorn from Tom’s Hardware that the development is progressing well. The reason for the absence at CES was reportedly due to time constraints, as their presentation exceeded the allowed 45-minute limit.
More recently, McAfee posted on the platform previously known as Twitter to share that the Radeon 9000 series is set to debut in March. Furthermore, he expressed satisfaction with how both the hardware and software are shaping up.
The Radeon 9000 series hardware and software are shaping up nicely, and we’re excited to offer a diverse range of these cards worldwide. Can’t wait for gamers to experience the cards once they hit the market in March! (January 20, 2025)
As a researcher, I find myself at the precipice of an unofficial disclosure that’s as tantalizingly close to an official announcement as we’ve ever been. The responses from Team Red supporters are a complex tapestry of emotions, and it’s not hard to see why. Analysts are quick to point out the sequential order of our calendar months: March follows January and February. This, in essence, suggests that NVIDIA’s RTX 5000 GPUs – encompassing the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070 – will already be available for purchase (and likely sold out in every corner of the market). The two more potent NVIDIA cards are slated for launch on January 30, while we can anticipate the arrival of the RTX 5070 series in February.
It seems clear that AMD’s Radeon 9000 series, specifically the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, are intended as direct competitors to NVIDIA’s GPUs launching in February. However, this suggests that AMD’s RDNA 4 cards may be released slightly later, potentially putting it a month or so behind its rival. This delay might not have been the original plan, as there are whispers that some stores are already selling these cards, and certain reviewers have received the new GPUs without updated drivers for testing. This situation leads me to some inferences.
It appears AMD may be holding back on revealing details until it has a better understanding of the pricing and performance of NVIDIA’s upcoming RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070, particularly given NVIDIA’s assertions that the RTX 5070 could match the RTX 4090 at a significantly lower $549 price. However, it remains uncertain to what extent these claims rely on the new Multi-Frame Generation technology of DLSS 4.
As an enthusiastic supporter, I ponder about the potential outcomes for AMD’s upcoming release, the RDNA 4. There’s a strong possibility that it could bring a groundbreaking advancement, perhaps even outperforming NVIDIA’s RTX 5070/Ti graphics cards. Sadly, those who already invested in an RTX 5000 card might find themselves regretting their timing, wishing they had waited to witness AMD’s culinary masterpiece.
It’s more probable that AMD will examine NVIDIA’s February launch specifications (such as price and performance), lower its own price if the performance is superior to NVIDIA, and hope that their loyal customers haven’t already purchased an RTX 5070/Ti at launch. I find myself undecided between AMD and NVIDIA for my next GPU, and I might be swayed to try and get an RTX 5070 on the day of its release.
From one standpoint, the unveiling of AMD’s RDNA 4 seems to have been mismanaged. However, it could also be argued that they are generating a lot of buzz about RDNA 4 without having to exert too much effort. I remain optimistic that AMD can indeed provide formidable competition for NVIDIA when they launch their RX 9000 GPUs.
