At CES 2025, AMD unveiled an upgrade for its APU collection, combining potent CPUs with robust graphics processing capabilities. Known as the Ryzen AI Max series of APUs, the top-tier chips in this new generation boast up to 16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores.
At the pinnacle, AMD offers the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, boasting a maximum boost speed of 5.1 GHz and packing 16 CPU cores, 40 GPU cores, as well as a neural processing unit capable of performing up to 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS). These all-in-one processors are set for release starting in Q1 2025.
At the lower spectrum, the Ryzen AI Max PRO 380 offers 6 CPU cores capable of handling 12 threads, along with 16 GPU cores. It can reach a maximum boost frequency of 4.9 GHz. Joining the series are the Ryzen AI Max and Max PRO 390 models, both sporting 12 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores, capable of reaching a max boost of 5 GHz. The Ryzen AI Max and Max PRO 385 models also have 8 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores, but they can boost up to 5 GHz as well. The only disparity between the 390 and 385 lies in their cache memory: the 385 boasts 40 MB, while the 390 offers a more generous 76 MB.
These latest APU models, known as Strix Halo, utilize AMD’s Zen 5 CPU architecture and RDNA 3.5 GPU architecture. They come in two versions: AI Max and AI Max Pro. The AI Max Pro version is tailored explicitly for high-end business workstations.
