The long-anticipated arrival of the new Radeon RDNA 4 graphics cards is imminent, as per AMD CEO Lisa Su during the latest AMD Q4 2024 Earnings Call; they are set to launch in early March.
Given NVIDIA’s recent unveiling of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 high-end GPUs, which are currently hard to find, and considering that these new models offer only modest improvements in raw performance compared to the RTX 40-series, AMD now has a fantastic chance to dominate the mid-range market.
During our conversation, Su emphasized that AMD faced a decrease in GPU revenue in the year 2024, as they liquidated their remaining inventory of older RDNA 3 graphics processors to pave way for the introduction of their latest Radeon hardware. This is the entire segment about the upcoming RDNA 4:
“The future of AMD’s GPU market lies with the anticipated release of RDNA 4, which promises significant advancements in performance and power efficiency. The new architecture is expected to deliver unparalleled gaming experiences, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as ray tracing and variable rate shading. Additionally, RDNA 4 will incorporate a more streamlined manufacturing process, ensuring cost-effectiveness while maintaining high-quality output.
In terms of gaming graphics, our yearly revenue saw a decrease due to us hastening the sales process through our distribution channels, in anticipation of the rollout of our upcoming Radeon 9000 series GPUs. With this new generation, we’re targeting the largest segment of the hardcore gaming market using our innovative RDNA 4 architecture. The RDNA 4 offers substantial enhancements in ray tracing performance and incorporates AI-enhanced upscaling technology, making high-quality 4K gaming accessible to a wider audience when the initial Radeon 9070 series GPUs hit the market in early March.
A piece of news reported by PCGamer emerged recently, which is approximately two weeks after AMD executive David McAfee hinted at a similar launch date on X (previously Twitter). McAfee had merely disclosed “March” as the launch period, thus providing some relief that we won’t have to wait too much longer. This update comes as good news for those eagerly waiting for an upgrade and struggling to get their hands on an NVIDIA card.
The Radeon 9000 series hardware and software are shaping up nicely, and we’re excited to offer a diverse range of these graphics cards worldwide. Gaming enthusiasts won’t have to wait long as they’ll be available for purchase starting March! (January 20, 2025)
Following AMD’s revised CES 2025 presentation, there was no mention of RDNA 4, surprisingly, even though media outlets received press kits detailing its release along with the new Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 desktop GPUs. At AMD’s CES booth, advancements in FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 were showcased, a shift towards machine learning to rival NVIDIA’s DLSS. The upgraded FSR 4 appears to be a significant leap forward compared to its FSR 3.1 predecessor, making it an attractive prospect for me when considering a new RDNA 4 GPU in the future.
It’s been reported that retailers may have been accumulating RDNA 4 stocks as early as 2025, with some units already reaching reviewers. Upon hearing about McAfee’s launch, my initial response was favorable, leading me to believe that AMD could potentially gain an advantage due to the delay.
It seems that NVIDIA is encountering issues due to the restricted supply of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, a problem that may persist until March. However, there are hopes that their upcoming releases – the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 in February – might offer improved stock levels. Nonetheless, AMD’s anticipated Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 are predicted to compete fiercely with NVIDIA’s 5070-series graphics cards.
AMD has two paths to victory, and these outcomes could significantly depend on NVIDIA’s performance during its February release. Should the RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti surpass AMD’s newly launched GPUs in terms of performance, AMD might choose to reduce their prices, thereby attracting budget-conscious consumers. Conversely, if AMD’s new graphics cards outperform NVIDIA’s mid-range offerings, they are likely to sell well as long as there is adequate supply, without much need for aggressive marketing or promotion.
AMD’s gaming division needs a win
NVIDIA could benefit significantly from increased competition in the GPU market, particularly in the mid-range sector. Intel’s “Battlemage” GPUs show great promise, but they are primarily aimed at budget consumers. This means that AMD is left to face off against NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti with their upcoming RDNA 4 technology in the higher-end market.
In order to keep pace with NVIDIA and boost its gaming sector, AMD urgently requires a triumphant victory, as stated by Lisa Su during the earnings discussion. Notably, AMD’s gaming revenue dropped by 59% compared to last year, amounting to $563 million.
Su notes that part of the decline comes from declining console sales:
Semi-custom sales decreased as anticipated due to Microsoft and Sony concentrating on lowering their stock in retail channels. Overall, this console generation has been robust, with shipments exceeding $100 million collectively during the fourth quarter. Moving forward, we assume that channel inventories have stabilized, and semi-custom sales will resume typical trends around 2025.
2025 marks a change for AMD as they aim to consolidate their client and gaming sectors into a unified, reportable segment. This restructuring reflects their management approach to the business.
As an outside spectator, it’s evident that AMD is under pressure to make a strong impact with its upcoming RDNA 4 GPUs, not just for the sake of appeasing shareholders but also to introduce more diversity to the open market currently dominated by NVIDIA’s RTX 5000 series. The need for competition in March cannot be overstated as it is crucial to offer consumers a wider array of options and foster technological advancement.
