An Iconic Batman Villain’s Origin Story Is Revisited With a Surprising Twist

As a longtime Batman enthusiast, steeped in the rich lore and complexities of Gotham City’s denizens, I can hardly contain my excitement for DC’s new series, “Two-Face”! Having delved deep into the psyche of Harvey Dent during my immersion in the gripping saga of “Batman: City of Madness”, I eagerly await this fresh exploration into the fractured mind of one of Batman’s most intriguing villains.

In a fresh and unique manner, fans are given an opportunity to explore the origin story of one of Batman’s infamous adversaries, who have gained immense popularity, being featured in their own TV shows, films, and comics – with The Penguin and Joker: Folie a Deux being recent examples. Coming up next in the Batman comic series is Two-Face, as he takes center stage. The story of Harvey Dent’s transformation into Two-Face is known for its tragic depth, but now readers can delve deeper, understanding it from his perspective inside his mind.

As a gamer, I’m excited to share that DC has unveiled a sneak peek of the #1 issue of Two-Face, penned by Christian Ward, illustrated by Fábio Veras, colored by Ivan Plascencia, and lettered by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. This series is part of the DC All-In publishing initiative that unfolds post the Absolute Power event and marks the debut of the new Absolute Universe imprint.

The Two-Face #1 preview has internal narration from the titular villain, as we go from the court room where Harvey Dent was the prosecutor over Salvatore Maroni, to the present day with Two-Face at an all-villain trial at the White Church. Everything is from Two-Face’s point of view. The description of DC’s Two-Face series teases that the villain he has to represent is Victor Zsasz, who is accused of a murder he says he didn’t commit.

Following my captivation with crafting the intricate character of Harvey in “Batman: City of Madness“, Ward expressed his enthusiasm and pride about penning Two-Face’s inaugural solo series! To me, Two-Face isn’t merely my preferred Batman antagonist; he is my favorite Gotham citizen altogether. I can hardly contain my excitement as I embark on this journey with rising star artist Fábio Veras and the esteemed duo of colorist Ivan Plascencia and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, exploring unanticipated realms. The initial leg of our adventure returns Harvey Dent to the courtroom.

According to Ward, “Harvey is employing his criminology expertise to tackle the enigmatic and risky criminal activities prevalent in Gotham’s underworld. Simultaneously, he harbors hopes of regaining a peaceful life and possibly mending fences with his former friend, Bruce Wayne.” In other words, “Take your seats, court is now open! Harvey has made his decision, and the verdict is about to be announced!

In DC’s latest Two-Face series, Harvey Dent, after years of internal turmoil, has found a fragile truce between his two personas. As a skilled lawyer, he now takes on the challenge of resolving the complex cases of Gotham City’s most peculiar and perilous criminals. The first case begins with Victor Zsasz, who stands accused of murdering a fellow member of Gotham’s criminal underworld. With his unique understanding of the legal system from both perspectives, Harvey Dent is the ideal choice to defend a criminal in need.

The preview of Two-Face #1 is below. The issue goes on sale Wednesday, December 4th.
