Ananda Lewis had one special request before her untimely passing.
After the unfortunate passing of the former MTV VJ at the age of 52, following a five-year fight against breast cancer, her sister Lakshmi Emory disclosed that she managed to grant her last wish – spending one more special moment with her 14-year-old son Langston.
In a June 12 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Emory shared that her hope was for her to live until his graduation day, and remarkably, she achieved that goal.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share this heartfelt story: According to Emory, Lewis, who was close with Harry Smith, Will Smith’s brother, graduated from middle school hours before he passed away. Emory, being an ardent supporter of Lewis, often shared precious moments of their bond on social media platforms, making it a point to celebrate their relationship over the years.
Indeed, Lewis shared an insight into the yearly custom they initiated following his home education during childhood.
She shared a touching video on Instagram in January 2020, showing her son and herself reading a book about Martin Luther King Jr. They’ve been doing this tradition since he was three years old. Now, the roles have reversed, and he reads to her. In her caption, she encourages everyone to read with their children whenever possible. For those who can’t, she invites us all to join in and continue this important reading journey together. The video features “Doreen Rappaport‘s” children’s book about the late civil rights activist.
Just as Lewis had expressed his desire, she passed away with her loved ones – including Langston among them – present at her LA residence on June 11, according to Entertainment Tonight.
On the very same day, her sister shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, expressing, “Now she’s liberated, embraced by God’s divine care. May peace be with her.
Initially, Lewis disclosed that she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer back in 2020. Four years on, she revealed to CNN that she chose not to undergo a double mastectomy and instead opted for an alternative approach, aiming to eliminate the tumor from her body through different means.
By that following January, her tumor had metastasized and her cancer had reached stage 4.
In her essay published in Essence that month, Lewis expressed, “I don’t wish to spend a moment more than required enduring unnecessary hardship.” For her, that is not the kind of life she aspires for. When my time comes, I want to be able to reflect on my life and say, ‘I lived it precisely how I desired.’
