Andor Creator Explains Lack of Darth Vader & Emperor in Season 2

In a conversation with Rolling Stone following the debut of Andor’s second and final season on Disney+, showrunner Tony Gilroy explained that fans won’t see the return of iconic Star Wars villains Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine as the series comes to an end. Gilroy shared his reasoning behind excluding these well-known characters from the series.

As a movie enthusiast, let me clarify, crafting stories for Darth Vader was never something I had planned. Frankly speaking, writing for him feels confining. I’ve been there before, and I find that he has limited scope when it comes to dialogue.

Afterward, Gilroy clarified his choice regarding Palpatine. “He was simply too substantial a character for me to present,” he stated. “It was excessively demanding. At one time, I pondered the idea, but it proved to be too demanding.

From its initial broadcast onwards, the series Andor has stood out in the Star Wars franchise as a breath of fresh air by steering clear of frequent references to earlier films and television shows. During production, it was revealed that Disney and Lucasfilm did not impose any character requirements on the creative team behind Andor. At one stage, creator Tony Gilroy considered incorporating characters from the Rebel Alliance at Yavin IV, but this idea fell through due to scheduling conflicts with actors.

Without a doubt, one of Darth Vader‘s most notable roles in a Star Wars project from the Disney era was the film titled “Rogue One,” which Gilroy contributed to as a part of its creation. In this movie, Vader is involved in two unforgettable scenes: his discussion with Krennic on the planet Mustafar and the brutal attack in the movie’s finale within an enclosed corridor. Mentioned but not physically appearing in “Rogue One” is Palpatine.

While it’s enticing to imagine the return of characters like Vader and Palpatine on screen, the creative direction taken by Gilroy for Andor seems wise. Given the story he aims to tell, their presence might disrupt the narrative and overshadow the well-developed characters that have emerged throughout the series so far. Both Vader and Palpatine have already played significant roles in the Star Wars saga, including Vader’s appearance in Obi-Wan Kenobi. By focusing on lesser-known characters like Dedra Meero, Syril Karn, or Director Krennic, Andor offers a fresh perspective on the Empire’s tyranny and provides an opportunity to delve deeper into these characters, offering experiences that haven’t been explored before. Introducing Vader and Palpatine again could risk feeling repetitive or “old hat.

It’s surprising that showrunner Tony Gilroy has openly stated that Vader and Palpatine won’t be featured in Andor during Season 2, given that there are still several episodes left. Lucasfilm is typically secretive to maintain suspense, but Gilroy chose to confirm their absence. This could be beneficial as fans now have a clearer understanding of what to expect for the remainder of the season. In fact, Star Wars enthusiasts might even find this news reassuring, as it suggests that Andor will continue to delve into its captivating storyline and well-developed characters without any distractions from Sith Lords.
