Andor, Tony Gilroy, has acknowledged that some fans who hoped to see a romantic relationship between Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) and Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) from Rogue One might be disappointed because the show instead focuses on Cassian’s relationships with other characters, particularly Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona). Gilroy explained that he was aware of fan theories but felt it was necessary to delve into Cassian’s past and significant relationships for the series.
In his own words, Gilroy stated that he had a clear understanding of the events involving Jyn and Cassian in “Rogue One” as well as the elevator scene. He admitted to revisiting it, expressing satisfaction with how their relationship was depicted, finding it ambiguous and intriguing. He then expressed relief when he realized the editing did not reveal too much about the characters’ fate, allowing him creative liberty to delve into Cassian’s past relationships in “Andor” without being overly influenced by the ending of “Rogue One”. Gilroy simply put it that considering the dire circumstances, it made sense for a character to hold someone’s hand at the end of the world.
Gilroy further clarified that both Cassian and Bix, characters from the series Andor, seem to be quite open when it comes to their sexuality. He went on to discuss their complex relationship history within the show’s universe. “I believe their first kiss and possibly their first sexual encounter were with each other,” Gilroy said. “Given their age during their time on Ferrix, they might have been quite young. Their relationship has had periods of togetherness and separation. At the start of the series, Timm (James McArdle) is in control of their relationship dynamics. Cassian has a rich backstory, hinted at throughout the show, and his mother even calls him out on all his past relationships. He also has Windi (Katrina Nare) as a love interest on Niamos. I think they have a well-rounded understanding of various levels of love.
Gilroy acknowledged that some fans might be disappointed by Andor, particularly those who had put a lot of effort into fan fiction centered around a Cassian-Jyn romance, as it was not part of the official canon. “Those who have invested deeply in it,” he said, “It’s not something I am required to address, legally speaking, within the context of the series, but they put in a lot of effort, and it meant a lot to them. You wouldn’t want to crush someone’s garden, would you? But I have to make decisions based on what I need to do. There will likely be some who never recover from this. I apologize sincerely.
Navigating Canon, Fan Theories, and Creative Vision in Andor
In the final episode of the second season of Andor, we learn that Cassian Andor’s bond with Bix Caleen is deeply rooted, as a significant twist discloses that Bix was pregnant with Cassian’s child when she parted ways on Yavin. This revelation prompts Cassian to commit fully to the Rebellion cause. As the series concludes, we see Bix tenderly holding their baby in the fields of Mina-Rau, symbolizing Cassian’s departure for his perilous mission that ultimately leads up to the events depicted in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The appearance of Cassian and Bix’s child serves as a powerful emotional touchstone throughout Cassian’s character development. As he embarks on his risky mission to Scarif, he is not only fighting for the budding Rebel Alliance but also leaving behind a personal heritage. This revelation adds an additional layer of poignancy and self-sacrifice to Cassian’s eventual demise in Rogue One, as he remains unaware that he has a child.
In “Rogue One,” the character Cassian’s relationship with Cassian-Bix becomes his primary emotional and romantic anchor in his life before he meets Jyn Erso. This creative decision emphasizes their bond as the most crucial personal connection Cassian had, prioritizing it over all others, including his commitment to the Rebellion. Some fans who preferred a romantic relationship between Cassian and Jyn in “Rogue One” might have been disappointed by this. However, according to Gilroy, Bix continues to be Cassian’s main love interest, even though he is capable of forming connections with others.
Both seasons of Star Wars: Andor are available on Disney+.
