In an interview, Tony Gilroy, the mastermind behind ‘Andor’, hinted that his time in the Star Wars galaxy might be drawing to a close. He expressed a desire to explore new creative ventures now that ‘Andor’ is wrapping up its second season. After devoting a decade of his career to the Star Wars universe, Gilroy feels ready to embark on fresh projects without any lingering guilt about leaving the franchise behind.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve been dabbling in the cinematic universe for a decade and diving headfirst for the past six years. That’s quite a substantial portion of my life devoted to this incredible journey. There are other artistic ventures calling my name, but when it’s time to move on, I believe I’ll have carved out a significant section in the expansive Star Wars galaxy. I don’t feel any remorse for not contributing further; my work here speaks volumes enough.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I had the pleasure of being part of the Star Wars universe for the first time when I assisted with the reshoots for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” back in 2016. This opportunity netted me a generous $5 million. The film was critically acclaimed and raked in an impressive over $1 billion at the global box office. Fast forward to years later, I found myself back at Lucasfilm, this time taking the reins as showrunner for “Andor”. The first season of this series received unanimous praise when it debuted in 2022, earning me an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Drama Series category.
Apart from Star Wars, Gilroy is well-known for his contributions to the Bourne series and the 2007 courtroom drama Michael Clayton. For the latter, Gilroy received nominations for two Oscars (Best Director and Best Original Screenplay) along with numerous other recognitions. In the Bourne films, he wrote the initial trilogy and penned and directed the spinoff titled The Bourne Legacy.
Gilroy’s comments about his future with Star Wars are understandable yet unfortunate. He has demonstrated a skill for creating gripping stories without overly depending on the franchise’s history. While certain Star Wars projects have been criticized for their reliance on nostalgia and fan service, Andor offered a welcome change of pace, elevating the property to greater heights. It would have been thrilling to see what more Gilroy could contribute within the Star Wars universe, given the abundance of stories throughout its timeline that could have benefited from his unique perspective. However, he has found a comfortable spot in the Rogue One part of the universe, and now that this chapter has reached its end, he feels it’s appropriate to move on from this aspect of his career.
It’s anticipated that Andor Season 2, wrapping up Tony Gilroy’s tenure with Star Wars, concludes on a high note. Given its initial installment, it seems poised to deliver additional layers of captivating drama and intense action, similar to what made Season 1 so engaging. With characters like K-2SO and Director Krennic appearing in Season 2, Andor has the potential to deepen our understanding and admiration for Rogue One, making for a fitting farewell. It will be intriguing to see what Gilroy takes on next.
