Attention! Contains spoilers from the first three episodes of Andor‘s second season, now streaming on Disney+. The initial installments of this season have highlighted why the Rebel Alliance found Luke Skywalker valuable. Intriguingly, Cassian Andor’s theft of an Imperial TIE Avenger prototype is a significant plot point that emphasizes the challenge of piloting the vessel, adding some humor and levity to an otherwise grim series.
Initially, Cassian managed to master the controls of the TIE Avenger prototype and guide it effectively. However, it seemed that even the rebels he was trapped with on Yavin IV had trouble operating the same craft. Since the Rebel Alliance consists primarily of lawbreakers and outcasts, they didn’t have many options when it came to choosing pilots. This situation highlighted a weakness within the Rebel Alliance: an insufficient number of skilled aviators.
The Rebel Alliance Totally Had A Shortage Of Good Pilots
And Andor Just Showed How Bad It Really Was
When considering Cassian Andor as a character, his skill as a pilot isn’t the most prominent trait that stands out, but he has indeed demonstrated his competence as a pilot throughout Andor season 1 and in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. However, it could be said that Cassian is an average pilot at best, and his lack of expertise becomes apparent when he struggles to operate the TIE Avenger effectively.
If the Rebellion wanted to secure the TIE Avenger, they probably would have chosen one of their top-tier pilots. Yet, they sent Cassian instead, suggesting he might be the best pilot they currently had available. It’s also probable that the Rebellion was frequently in need of skilled pilots.
In fact, there was an entire episode in Star Wars Rebels titled “The Antilles Extraction” from season 3, episode 4. This episode aired two years after the recently released Andor episodes and featured a mission aimed at extracting three pilots who wished to defect from the Empire. It seems that finding skilled pilots for the Rebellion was a recurring challenge, one they were prepared to risk lives over in order to gain more proficient airmen.
Luke Was Probably Sent Up There To Die
A Dark, But Probably True Scenario
In the movie “A New Hope,” when Luke Skywalker enlisted in the Rebel Alliance, he was a greenhorn pilot, completely unproven. Essentially, he was a raw recruit, yet the rebels entrusted him with an X-wing to aid them in destroying the Death Star. The grim reality is that the rebels may have been willing to let Luke fly his own ship into battle because they were prepared for his possible demise.
In the optimal situation for an inexperienced pilot such as Luke, he would have attracted enough enemy fire to distract from the skilled and seasoned pilots. Despite Luke ultimately demonstrating exceptional piloting skills by destroying the first Death Star, it’s likely that initial expectations for him were fairly modest. Remarkably, it seems like a small miracle that Luke turned out to be even a decent pilot.
Initially, the Rebel Alliance didn’t value Luke Skywalker for his developing Force abilities when he joined, but they needed him as a pilot, despite his inexperience. Similarly, while Cassian Andor is competent behind the controls, it would be beneficial if season 2 of Andor featured more skilled pilots operating ships like the TIE Avenger.
