As a die-hard Star Wars enthusiast, I can’t help but feel exhilarated with the 20th anniversary re-release of “Revenge of the Sith,” May the Fourth approaching, and the latest updates on the future of the franchise from Star Wars Celebration. The anticipation is at an all-time high for fans like me! And speaking of which, the second season of the much-awaited Star Wars series, “Andor,” has commenced on Disney+ with a three-episode arc. Set four years before the first Death Star battle, this season ratchets up the tension for the budding Rebel Alliance, especially Cassian Andor’s rebel cell led by Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård). The rebels on the ground aren’t the only ones feeling the weight of the Empire’s oppressive regime; Senator Mon Mothma of Chandrila has been subtly involved in rebel activities for quite some time now.
In the show “Andor” Season 2, we see that Mothma’s beliefs conflicted heavily with the Emperor, making her undercover actions vital. On the other hand, the animated series “Star Wars Rebels” depicts the instance where Mon Mothma publicly renounced Palpatine, declared herself an adversary of the Empire, and stepped into the limelight as the leader of the Rebellion.
Based on the developments seen in the initial three episodes of Andor, it seems that the groundwork is gradually being laid for Mon Mothma’s eventual betrayal or defection.
Star Wars Rebels Revealed a Monumental Moment For the Rebellion
In Season 3, Episode 18 of “Star Wars Rebels,” titled “Secret Cargo,” Captain Hera Syndulla and her Spectre rebel team, sailing on their ship, the Ghost, receive a secret assignment from Senator Bail Organa. The nature of the mission remains unclear to the Ghost’s crew, but it coincides with a HoloNet broadcast of Mon Mothma publicly criticizing the Empire. This broadcast, which denounces the Empire for various atrocities, particularly their actions on Ghorman where they exploited and massacred citizens, causes an uproar in the Galactic Senate. In her speech, Mothma highlights Palpatine’s role in these humanitarian crimes, drawing attention to his wrongdoings in the public eye.
As the Ghost team watches in awe at Mothma’s courage and miraculous escape from Coruscant, they discover that the cargo Bail Organa entrusted them with was none other than Mon Mothma herself. Upon her arrival on the Ghost, she reveals her plans to not only retreat to a safe haven on Chandrila but also to unite all the scattered rebel cells into a powerful and united force for a massive rebellion against the Empire.
Following Hera’s skilled navigation of her team and Mothma through dangerous cosmic terrain, successfully avoiding Imperial pursuits led by Grand Admiral Thrawn, Mothma transmits a communication to the rebel bases directly from the cockpit of the Ghost.
Here is Senator Mon Mothma speaking. She has faced accusations of treason due to her criticisms against a corrupt Galactic Senate. According to her, this Senate operates under the dark influence of the Emperor’s manipulative strategies. For far too long, she claims, the oppressive grip of the Empire has suppressed our liberties and suffocated our freedoms in the guise of preserving our safety. No longer will she stand idly by. In the face of Imperial threats and even the Emperor himself, she expresses no fear as she embarks on a new course. Starting today, we unite as allies. Senator Mothma steps down from her position to battle alongside you, not from the detached chambers of politics but from the thick of the fight. Together, our mission is clear: to dismantle the Empire and restore our Republic. Will you join me?
As Mothma’s plea for allies echoed, a diverse fleet of rebel vessels emerged from hyperspace, aligning with the Ghost, marking the start of a rebellion far greater than anyone had ever dreamt possible.
How Andor is Building to Mon Mothma’s Life-Changing Move
In the opening moments of Season 2’s premiere of Andor, we witness the initial stages of Mon Mothma’s decisive moment – the tragedy at Ghorman. During a confidential gathering of high-ranking officials within the Empire, Imperial Security Bureau agent Dedra Meero becomes aware of the Emperor’s design for Ghorman. Though Palpatine has not specified the means of eradicating the inhabitants of Ghorman at this point, his objective is unmistakable, as the mineral essential for the Death Star’s reactor lenses can be found in Ghorman.
The events outlined at the initial meeting take place 4 years before the Battle of Yavin (4 BBY), but Mon Mothma’s defection, as depicted in Rebels, doesn’t occur until two years later in 2 BBY. Since each week of Andor releases episodes focusing on yearly increments of time, the Ghorman Massacre and Mothma’s escape with the aid of the Ghost crew should unfold by the third week of Season 2 (which coincidentally falls during the week of May the Fourth, or “Star Wars Day”). How could we celebrate May the Fourth more appropriately than by witnessing the Rebel Alliance forming for the first time in live-action?
It’s uncertain if the dramatic escape of Mon Mothma, assisted by Hera Syndulla and the Spectre cell (now featured in the live-action Star Wars universe), as depicted in Rebels, will be replicated in Andor. Nonetheless, Mothma plays a significant role in Andor, and her storyline is rapidly escalating towards a pivotal turning point.
Andor and Star Wars Rebels are both streaming on Disney+.
