As a lifelong Star Wars fan who grew up playing the classic space flight sim games like X-Wing and TIE Fighter, this latest news about the inclusion of the TIE Avenger in Star Wars: Andor Season 2 has me absolutely thrilled! I remember spending countless hours flying missions as an Imperial pilot back in the day, so seeing this iconic ship make its live-action debut is like a dream come true.
In the second season of “Star Wars: Andor”, we’ll see some deep-rooted “Star Wars” history being brought to life as official canon, through a unique design of the TIE Fighter making its live-action debut. A sneak peek at the upcoming Disney+ content for 2025 gave us brief glimpses of “Andor” Season 2, one scene showing Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) engaging in his old antics, this time hijacking an Imperial TIE Fighter. Keen-eyed “Star Wars” enthusiasts quickly spotted that this particular TIE design wasn’t new at all; it’s the TIE Avenger model of the ship that featured in the 1994 PC game “Star Wars: TIE Fighter”.
TIE Fighter” was a follow-up space flight simulation video game, released after the 1993 game “Star Wars: X-Wing.” The events in “TIE Fighter” take place immediately following the Battle of Hoth from “The Empire Strikes Back,” and conclude just before the Battle of Endor as depicted in “Return of the Jedi.” In this game, players were given the opportunity to participate in various space missions within the Star Wars universe. The narrative revolves around two Imperial Admirals attempting to undermine the Empire by either joining forces with the Rebels or eliminating the Emperor.
The TIE Avenger was a ship that modeled after Darth Vader’s iconic TIE Advanced x 1 fighter from the original Star Wars film A New Hope — so it was definitely a notable addition to the TIE Fighter game. Like so many things in Star Wars, the TIE Avenger (and other variant models) have become more and more iconic over the years, even though the model technically wasn’t ever an official part of Star Wars canon. Now, thanks to Andor Season 2, it will be.
It’s pleasing to notice that the Star Wars: TIE Fighter and the entire Star Wars: X-Wing game series are finally getting recognition. These games were particularly significant for both Star Wars and gaming at their respective times, as they provided a new avenue for fans to delve deeper into the franchise and for Lucasfilm to extend its brand into home entertainment, broadening possibilities.
In a narrative sense, Tony Gilroy, the mastermind behind “Andor”, is skilled at crafting Easter eggs that are subtly embedded within the storyline without being overbearing. This particular Easter egg fits seamlessly into the “Andor” series, where Cassian Andor is on a mission to uncover the Empire’s secret weapon (the Death Star), and in this instance, the TIE Avenger he steals could potentially be one of the first models designed for Darth Vader himself. It’s best that Vader isn’t present during the theft!
Star Wars: Andor Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on April 22nd.
