Andor Star Breaks Silence After Surprise Star Wars Recasting

Actor Benjamin Bratt from Star Wars: Andor shares insights on embodying Senator Bail Organa in the series. In an interview for a behind-the-scenes feature on the official Star Wars website, Bratt talked about his appreciation for showrunner Tony Gilroy’s narrative style, the importance of Bail in the storyline, and stepping into the shoes previously worn by Jimmy Smits. Aware of the responsibility to uphold the work done by Smits with the character over time, Bratt aimed to preserve the qualities that have endeared Senator Organa to fans.

Bratt remarked about Smits, “Jimmy has consistently shown himself to be an exceptionally gifted performer. He embodies refinement, a genuine grace, a sincerity that perfectly suits the role.

Bratt discussed how Bail’s role fits into the storyline, which was intriguing to him. “We discover he’s a master strategist who can add the right amount of tension when necessary,” he stated. “This is what captured my interest and motivated me to take on the role.

In the 6th episode of Andor Season 2, titled “What a Festive Evening”, we were introduced to Bratt as Bail Organa for the first time. His role was relatively small, consisting mainly of a conversation with Mon Mothma and her husband Perrin Fertha. This unexpected appearance sparked excitement among fans, given that Smits had been the only actor to portray Bail in live-action up until now. Smits has also played Bail in two prequel trilogy films and Rogue One as well as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The fact that other Star Wars movie actors reprise their roles on Andor made the recasting of Bail Organa a bit of a shock to viewers.

Gilroy clarified the reason behind the character development, pointing out that scheduling conflicts caused by Smits’ involvement in ‘Andor’ Season 2 filming necessitated a change. Since Lucasfilm couldn’t postpone production, Bratt was chosen to replace Smits temporarily. The minor role given to Bratt in “What a Festive Evening” was strategically created to ease viewers into the recasting process, with Bail having a more substantial part in subsequent episodes.

Previously, Gilroy expressed his intention to incorporate more characters from “Rogue One” (specifically Rebel figures on Yavin) into “Andor”, but this plan was hindered by scheduling conflicts. Although it seems that these characters may not feature in the series, Bail Organa is such a significant figure, being one of Mon Mothma’s key allies and playing a crucial role in the Rebellion, that he can’t be written out. Since “Andor” delves into the origins of the Rebel Alliance, it would be challenging to narrate the story without Bail. This necessitated recasting, but luckily, Bratt understands the importance of the role and has striven to emulate Smits’ portrayal admirably. The actor appears capable of making the part his own while preserving the same essence.

Initially, some Star Wars enthusiasts might have found Cassandra Bratt’s portrayal of Mon Mothma in Andor Season 2 a bit jarring. But as we move past that, viewers can now fully immerse themselves in the second half of the season. As the storyline gets closer to the events of Rogue One, anticipation builds for more gripping drama and intense action. With some crucial character arcs coming to a close, it will be interesting to see how Bratt’s performance evolves. Given the significant role Bratt appears to play in the remaining six episodes, fans are eagerly awaiting his impact on the franchise.
