Discussing their captivating love story before the second season premiere, two main characters from the hit series Andor are generating excitement among viewers. As the critically praised Andor prepares for its last season on Disney+, it gears up towards the events depicted in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Audience members have grown attached to several characters within Andor, including Dedra Meero (portrayed by Denise Gough) and Syril Karn (Kyle Soller). Although these characters hold significant roles in the Empire, it’s their romantic relationship that has fans eagerly awaiting Season 2. Fortunately, the actors portraying Syril and Dedra have shared some insights into what Andor enthusiasts can anticipate.
At Star Wars Celebration this past weekend, ComicBook had conversations with Denise Gough and Kyle Soller about the second season of Andor. Firstly, they spoke with Denise Gough, who was asked to explain the relationship between Syril and Dedra on a scale ranging from “Super Chill” to “Very Complicated.” In response, Gough chose “Very Complicated.
Kyle Soller chose the term “Bonkers Complicated” when asked about a particular topic, explaining that he and his co-star find it difficult to explain. He likened their characters to two unusual animals in the same enclosure, each requiring different care but interacting in unpredictable ways. Director Tony Gilroy masterfully crafted situations where these characters’ interactions gradually challenge everything they believed, creating a strange dynamic filled with staring and moments of confusion.
Denise Gough has discussed the dynamic between characters Dedra and Syril on Andor Season 2, referring to their connection as having “a hint of the unusual in each other.” The actress explained that although Dedra and Syril suit one another well, Dedra’s unwavering loyalty to the Empire and maintaining order keeps her from growing too attached to Syril. Furthermore, Gough suggested that a conventional, healthy relationship might not be possible for Dedra.
In Gough’s words to Collider, both characters have their peculiar sides, and there seems to be a match for everyone, doesn’t there? They complement each other in an unusual way, but unfortunately, Dedra lacks the capability. Her tendency to manipulate stems from her deep-rooted love for the Empire. In essence, she struggles to connect intimately with someone due to her devotion to the Empire. The Empire, rather than any particular individual, seems to bring out the worst in her. Keep an eye on Dedra’s actions this season, as they involve her in some challenging situations due to her commitments to the Empire. This may compromise any chance she has for a healthy, normal relationship.
In the immediate future, Tony Gilroy will step down from his role as showrunner for Star Wars’ “Andor”. Gilroy previously collaborated on the script for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and assumed the position of showrunner for “Andor” during its early stages. Recently, he expressed interest in taking a break to focus on another project which is currently in pre-production.
For approximately six years now, including a stint on “Rogue” prior, Gilroy mentioned, “I’ve put in 24 episodes altogether. I believe I’ve tended to my corner of the professional landscape quite well, and I’m keen to explore a new creative endeavor for a while.
Andor returns for its second and final season on Tuesday, April 22nd on Disney+.
