In earlier times, television shows were often extended to milk them dry financially. Nowadays, it’s common to see brief runs on streaming platforms and networks for numerous reasons, with many shows not making it past five or more seasons. Star Wars: Andor is just one example of this trend. The first season of this Star Wars TV series was a resounding success across the board. However, after Season 2 of Andor airs in 2025, that will mark the end for this Cassian Andor spinoff series. In total, Andor will only last two seasons, amounting to a complete run of 24 episodes.
This aligns with the standard format for contemporary big-budget streaming series on platforms like Disney+, including Star Wars programs such as The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte, which each ran for a single season, while The Mandalorian has only three seasons thus far. However, there are specific reasons why Andor Season 2 is the final season. Despite fans of the Star Wars universe being fond of this part of the galaxy far, far away, creating more seasons for this particular show isn’t feasible due to practical constraints.
Back in 2018, I can still recall the excitement as one of the earliest Star Wars shows for Disney+, Andor, was announced to the public. By the end of that year, a showrunner had already been appointed, signaling that things were truly taking off for this series. It wasn’t impossible to envision it premiering by the early months of 2021. However, fate had other plans. The unexpected COVID-19 pandemic struck, and Rogue One’s unnamed director, Tony Gilroy, stepped in to guide Andor, pushing back the production significantly.
The Changing Plans For Andor’s Length
The broadcast for the series “Andor” won’t start until August 2022, which is almost four years after its initial announcement. Just before the premiere episodes were released, it was revealed that the original plan was for the series to last five seasons. However, cinematographer Adriano Goldman had previously mentioned that there were ambitions to complete the show in just three seasons. The significant delay in airing the first season and the effort required to produce those initial 12 episodes seemed to have affected the long-term plans for the series. Later, Diego Luna confessed that he too had joined “Andor” under the belief that it would be a five-season show.
Gilroy revealed a month later that the extensive plans for Andor had to be significantly changed due to various reasons. The complexity and scale of Andor made it a challenging project to develop and produce, which led Gilroy to understand during the filming of the first season that creating five seasons of Andor was impractical. Considering the fact that Luna would naturally age over the period required to produce just one season consisting of 12 episodes, it wouldn’t make sense to portray an older Luna as a prequel to the 2016 movie Rogue One. To avoid such absurdity, reducing the number of seasons to two was deemed the most sensible decision for everyone involved.
What Will Andor Season 2 Entail?
In the second season of Andor, the story will condense the events that took place between the end of the first season and Rogue One into just 12 episodes. During the promotion of the initial season, director Tony Gilroy hinted that the final scene would seamlessly transition into Cassian Andor’s introduction in Rogue One. The creators have a substantial amount of ground to cover in this season, but it seems they are determined to provide a fitting and epic conclusion for Andor.
Gilroy’s approach to limiting the number of Andor episodes may disappoint some Star Wars enthusiasts who eagerly anticipate more stories about Cassian Andor. In fact, if this series had been released in the 1990s, it might have continued indefinitely until its ratings declined significantly. However, Gilroy’s statements over the past three years have made it clear that Andor will only last for two seasons. Since the second season directly leads into Rogue One, there’s no possibility of an extension.
In olden times, the idea of confining a TV series to merely two seasons would have seemed absurd. However, the budgets and scope of shows like Andor’s from back then were not as extensive as they are today. At least fans of Star Wars can prepare themselves for the upcoming conclusion of Andor: A Star Wars Story, hoping that the final season will be even half as impressive as the first.
Andor is now streaming on Disney+.
