Actor Benjamin Bratt, known for playing Bail Organa in Season 2 of “Andor,” expresses his willingness to reprise the character in a future Star Wars project. After the finale of “Andor,” Bratt spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his experience on the hit drama, his feelings about taking over from Jimmy Smits as the Senator, and potential roles in the distant galaxy. Bratt lavished praise on “Andor” showrunner Tony Gilroy, joking that he’d even work in catering if it meant another collaboration.
Open to opportunities. If Tony requires assistance with craft services on his next project, I’d be there. I hold him in high regard, unfortunately, our paths seldom crossed due to the writers’ strike and him being based stateside. He assembled an exceptional group of writers, directors, and actors, creating a production that functions flawlessly from top to bottom. In my opinion, this is television at its finest. I am deeply thankful and incredibly proud to be associated with it in some capacity.
Initially, when it was announced that Bratt would be cast in Andor, details about his character were kept secret. It wasn’t until the airing of his first episode, titled “What a Festive Evening,” that his character was finally disclosed. Unfortunately, Smits, who played Bail in several films and the series Obi-Wan Kenobi, was unable to participate due to scheduling issues. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bratt shared that he revisited Smits’ scenes to maintain respect for what Smits had previously accomplished, while also adding his unique touch to the role.
Andor concluded its season, seamlessly transitioning into the events depicted in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Bratt made an appearance on three episodes during Season 2, portraying a significant supporting character, one of Mon Mothma’s most trusted allies in the initial stages of the Rebellion.
Initially, it might have been surprising for long-time Star Wars fans to see Bratt as Senator Organa. But he quickly settled into the role and gave a powerful performance that echoed the essence of the character without being a carbon copy of Smits. His portrayal in Andor has left fans hoping he could play the role again if the chance arises. While Smits would likely be the first choice due to his past connection with the character, if Smits isn’t available again, Bratt has shown he can convincingly play Bail Organa.
The primary concern here is whether we’ll ever see Bail return in any future Star Wars installments, given that he perishes during the destruction of Alderaan in Star Wars lore. As it stands, none of the current projects are set at a time when Bail would still be alive. It’s uncertain if any new project will materialize, but remember, unexpected successes do occur – like the prequel series to Rogue One. So, there’s always a chance Lucasfilm might find a way to continue Bail’s story.
