Andrew Garfield Addresses La La Land Rumor About Him & Ex Emma Stone

As someone who has closely followed Andrew Garfield‘s journey from the stage to the big screen, I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed that the City of Stars didn’t quite align with his own love story. While it’s intriguing to speculate about the inspiration behind La La Land, it seems we’ll never truly know if Seb and Mia were indeed based on Andrew and Emma.

The City of Stars is not shining just for Andrew Garfield

The We Live In Time star recently reacted to a rumor that La La Land, written and directed by Damien Chazelle, was inspired by his former relationship with Emma Stone

Andrew, who started dating Emma following their work together on The Amazing Spider-Man in 2010 before splitting up in 2015, said to Esquire in an article published October 2nd, “I believe that people generally require something to hold faith in.” Regarding his personal life, he added, “I’ve never and I won’t ever discuss or confirm or deny anything about it with anyone, at any time.

Meanwhile, Andrew didn’t reveal whether he was part of the group who conceived the idea, but Chazelle – who collaborated with the film’s composer Justin Hurwitz (a fellow Harvard classmate) to draft the script for a senior thesis project – has hinted at the sources that inspired this movie featuring Emma and Ryan Gosling.

Sadly for fans of Andrew and Emma’s romantic history, it has nothing to do with the former flames.

In 2016, Damien clarified to the Hollywood Reporter that the movie isn’t adapted from any source material. He found something exceptionally beautiful in a city constructed by dreamers with impractical aspirations, who risked everything they had for those very dreams.

What is the origin of the theories connecting Emma Stone’s and Andrew Garfield’s relationship with the characters from “La La Land”? Following the release of the movie in 2016, Emma won her first Oscar for Best Actress at the 89th Academy Awards. Many fans noticed similarities between Seb (Ryan) and Mia (Emma)’s love story in “La La Land” and the real-life romance that developed between the Spider-Man co-stars.

The 2017 essay in Refinery29 presented Seb and Mia as two individuals who share an artistic bond, temporarily pursuing individual stardom. Despite not being a couple at the moment, their affection is genuine. The future remains uncertain for them.

Since the release of “La La Land,” it appears that Andrew and Emma’s relationship trajectory mirrors Seb and Mia’s in the sense that they are not currently together. Andrew has reportedly been dating Dr. Kate Tomas since April. On the other hand, Emma officially married Dave McCary in 2020, and they became parents to a 3-year-old daughter named Louise in the following year.

Despite their separation, it’s clear that the duo have maintained a friendly relationship, as they still communicate with each other. This camaraderie was evident when Andrew appeared alongside Tobey Maguire in the movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” where he revealed Emma was among those eagerly seeking information about their rumored reunion in the film.

On the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast in 2022, he shared that Emma constantly texted him. She asked, ‘Are you in this latest Spider-Man movie?’ To which he replied, ‘I haven’t got a clue what you’re on about!’ She persisted, ‘Come on, just spill the beans!’ He continued to pretend ignorance, finding it amusing. Eventually, she found out and scolded him, saying ‘You’re such a jerk!’
