Andrew Garfield Replaces Matthew McConaughey in Jason Bourne Movie

I’m excited to share that I might be stepping into the role previously held by Matthew McConaughey in Paul Greengrass’ upcoming film, which is currently unnamed. This exciting opportunity comes following my stint in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. It feels like I’ll be diving right back into the action!

As I’ve heard, Garfield is rumored to portray a character with strong similarities to the historical figure Wat Tyler in the upcoming film “The Rage.” However, it’s important to note that this connection hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. Regardless, “The Rage” will delve into the events of the Peasants’ Revolt in 1381 England, where a band of protesters, led by Tyler, marched from Canterbury to London to push for socio-economic changes and the abolition of the poll tax imposed by King Richard II.

Andrew Garfield Joins Period Drama The Rage

If Garfield portrays Wat Tyler, he would be emulating the acting style of Anthony Hopkins, who played the rebel in the 1969 film “Medieval England: The Peasants Revolt.” Initially, Benedict Cumberbatch was chosen to play Tyler in “The Rage,” but McConaughey took over the role later.

Tyler, who was a modest rooftop tile-layer, unexpectedly became engulfed in revolutionary zeal during 1381. He played a significant role in leading the protesters on their journey to London for dialogue with the monarchy, but tragically he was killed by two officers of the king’s military forces under King Richard II, preventing any negotiations from ever taking place.

As reported by Deadline, the production company, Focus Features, is working on securing a distribution agreement within the U.S. for the film titled The Rage during the Cannes Film Festival this weekend. However, representatives from Focus chose not to provide comments regarding this matter.

The Story of Wat Tyler Has Been Fictionalized Many Times

The Rebel Was Killed by King Richard II’s Forces in 1381 But His Story Lived On

  • Tyler’s story has been mentioned in notable works by authors Herman Melville and Mark Twain.
  • British TV presenter and politician Melvyn Bragg fictionalized Tyler’s story for his novel Now is the Time.
  • Tyler’s story was also immortalized in musical works by composer Alan Bush and punk rocker Frank Turner.

Greengrass, who recently directed the 2020 Western drama starring Tom Hanks, is set to unveil his next cinematic endeavor titled “The Lost Bus“. In this film, Matthew McConaughey takes center stage, portraying a bus driver guiding a group of children through the devastating and deadly California wildfire – the state’s most destructive on record. America Ferrera contributes to the cast in a supporting role for “The Lost Bus“, which is scheduled for release on Apple TV+.

After achieving success with a 2024 romantic drama, Garfield is eager to take on new projects. Notably, he’s shown interest in accepting roles again, following his appearance in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

He expressed his deep affection for playing Spider-Man, and if given the chance to reprise the role, he suggested it might feel odd. Alternatively, he hinted at a desire to take on a unique, unconventional approach.

The actor continued by expressing a desire for something distinctly unconventional and unexpected, much like the creative liberty seen in the animated “Spider-Verse” films. He believes these movies are exceptional, as they provide numerous opportunities to pay homage to the character across various universes.

Garfield has lately announced his involvement in the film directed by Martin Scorsese, which tells the story of Jesus Christ’s life.

Garfield stated, “A story has been circulating, but according to my information, it’s false.” He added humorously, “I enjoy my work too. You can’t just sit around hoping Scorsese will call, as he only makes a film every three years and often Leo DiCaprio is involved.

“There was a rumor. It’s not true to my knowledge.”
