It’s widely acknowledged that “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” has been an enormous hit in the gaming world. Even five years post its release, gamers continue to take delight in designing and tailoring their islands, interacting with villagers, and accumulating bells. Some ardent fans have even acquired multiple Nintendo Switch systems solely for initiating a fresh island experience. Nevertheless, despite being five years old, “New Horizons” still lacks some cherished elements from the Animal Crossing series. This includes exclusive Nintendo-themed characters and decorations, which were common in previous games such as “New Leaf.

View Urgent ForecastAs a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the beginning of my journey with the Animal Crossing series, where it all started with the original game that introduced the concept of Nintendo collectibles within the game. You could obtain NES games from villagers or discover them in secret spots. Since then, every subsequent Animal Crossing game has paid homage to the legendary world of Nintendo. One such example is the adored Nintendo 3DS title, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which was filled with subtle references to classic Nintendo games. Among these tributes, several villagers hailing from The Legend of Zelda series, like Epona, Ganon, and Medli, made their way into New Leaf, accompanied by Zelda-themed furniture and decorative items.
They should bring back Nintendo themed villagers!

Oh dear, it’s been five years since we welcomed Animal Crossing: New Horizons into our lives, yet those cherished Nintendo-themed characters still haven’t made a comeback. Strangely enough, no new Nintendo villagers have been introduced to the game either, which has left quite a few of us fans scratching our heads and wondering why this fan-favorite feature hasn’t resurfaced given its immense popularity.
As I scroll through the comments on this r/AnimalCrossing post by Redditor @Infinite_Truck2164, it seems that many of us are yearning for these treasured characters to reappear in the contemporary Animal Crossing world.
Indeed, this is merely the latest expression of disappointment about the absence of crossover villagers in New Horizons. Ever since its launch, fans have been eagerly wondering where their favorite characters have gone, but unfortunately, a satisfactory explanation remains elusive.
How Nintendo and Other Crossover Characters Worked in Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Characters from various franchises, including Nintendo’s, were introduced into the game New Leaf for the 3DS, along with compatibility for amiibo figures. With the update Welcome Amiibo , players gained the ability to acquire crossover characters from games like Splatoon, The Legend of Zelda, Sanrio, and even Seven-Eleven stores. These characters could be obtained by scanning their amiibo figures, creating a fun way for merchandising.
It’s intriguing that Nintendo’s game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, hasn’t introduced crossover characters yet, despite the company frequently releasing new amiibo figures and fans expressing interest in these characters’ return. Since Nintendo produces both Animal Crossing and the characters within it, one might expect using its own figures in the game to be relatively straightforward. Furthermore, this move could stimulate demand for more expensive Legend of Zelda amiibo among Animal Crossing enthusiasts.
It seems unlikely that the crossover characters from the previous “New Horizons” will make a reappearance at this stage, given that there hasn’t been an official announcement about the next “Animal Crossing” game yet. However, since fans are eagerly anticipating news of a sequel to “New Horizons” for the Switch 2, it’s possible we might hear something soon. If Nintendo is already working on the next installment, they may not be considering significant updates like introducing Epona or other crossover characters in this game. Yet, we can keep our fingers crossed and fantasize about their return in the upcoming “Animal Crossing” title instead.
