Animated Ghostbusters Movie Coming to Netflix (And We’re Still Getting a TV Series)

As a lifelong fan of the Ghostbusters franchise, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming animated film and series! The success of the Spider-Verse movies has shown us what can be achieved when beloved characters are given fresh, innovative stories, and I have high hopes that this new venture will do the same for the ‘Busters.

An upcoming animated Ghostbusters series isn’t the only exciting news; a new Ghostbusters animated movie is also in the works, according to Deadline. The partnership between Sony Animation and Netflix will lead to the development of this film, with Kris Pearn set to direct. Although still in its early stages, those close to the project are optimistic about its potential, believing it could emulate the success that the Spider-Verse films have brought to Spider-Man.

The Spider-Verse films have accumulated over 1.2 billion dollars globally, with another movie planned to round off the trilogy. If an upcoming Ghostbusters animated film gains similar popularity, it could significantly boost the franchise – regardless of whether it’s shown in cinemas or streamed online. However, keep in mind that Netflix has only had modest success at the box office in the past, so there’s a chance this trend may continue.

Previously, Pearn has collaborated successfully with Netflix and Sony Animation on projects like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 and The Willoughbys. However, it remains unclear what direction the upcoming Ghostbusters film will take or whether it will align with the forthcoming animated series in terms of style.

It’s terrific news for fans of the Ghostbusters franchise as we’re expecting not one but two significant animated projects! The latest movie, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” managed to rake in approximately $201 million at the box office. In an interview with The Direct, director Gil Kenan shed light on the future of the series and hinted at more live-action films on the horizon.

As a passionate movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that the discussion about crafting epic Ghostbusters tales for the silver screen is definitely ongoing. Jason [Reitman] and I take great pride in being the custodians of the Ghostbusters legacy, a role we don’t take lightly. Rest assured, there will be more to come on this exciting journey. Keep your eyes peeled for updates – there’s plenty more to share about our Ghostbuster adventure later!

In terms of the animated series, Elliott Kaplan takes on the roles of writer, showrunner, and executive producer for Sony’s Ghost Corps, Inc. Alongside him, Jason Reitman and franchise co-creator Dan Aykroyd will also serve as executive producers. At this stage, specific details are limited, but it is rumored to share a similar mood with the latest films, which began a new phase with Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
