Anime Fans Shocked by 2024’s Best Girl Winner: Anna Yanami Takes the Crown

2024 witnessed an overflow of remarkable anime releases, some of the most significant in recent years, leaving fans thrilled. A poll was conducted among these enthusiasts to determine who they consider as the ‘Anime Girl of the Year.’ It’s been a fantastic era for anime and manga lovers, with more titles hitting the market than ever before. This abundance guarantees a plethora of noteworthy shows that fans eagerly follow week by week. These series have also introduced us to a multitude of new heroines who, despite their brief screen time, have already left lasting impressions on fans.

After some time has passed since 2024 and viewers have had ample opportunity to watch various series, fans on Reddit have collectively chosen their favorite female character of the year. Out of 44 potential heroines from 25 diverse shows, Anna Yanami from Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! emerged victorious as Anime’s Best Girl of 2024. This victory is particularly significant as she outperformed notable competitors such as Marcelle Donato from Delicious in Dungeon.

Who Were 2024’s Best Anime Girls?

Observing the tournament bracket, I noticed that four finalists emerged from the forty-four potential champions, spanning two sides of the bracket: Anna Yanami and Marcelle Donato from “Dandadan”, Momo Ayase also from “Dandadan”, and Utena Hiiragi from “Gushing Over Magical Girls”. In a remarkable showdown, Anna clinched the title with almost a thousand votes, highlighting her significant influence as a heroine throughout the year. Although “Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!” may not have immediately or globally resonated like “Dandadan”, it still struck a chord with fans in an unique manner, particularly through characters such as Anna who captivated audiences in a way that was distinct from other shows.

In the series “Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!”, it wasn’t just Anna who participated in the tournament; all the heroines had their opportunities to reach the top. However, they were each bested by more prominent heroines along the way. It is also plausible that Marcelle came very close to securing the top position with approximately 500 votes. Moreover, “Delicious in Dungeon” gained significant traction among fans in 2024, following its first half’s release in the Fall 2023 anime schedule, and continued to grow in popularity.

Why Is Anna So Popular?

Previously, I mentioned “Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!” wasn’t the most buzzed-about anime release of last year. Titles like “Kaiju No. 8” generated more excitement, but “Makeine” managed to make an impact in unique ways. The female characters, including Anna, are often portrayed as unsuccessful in love, a theme hinted at by the series’ title. However, these heroines are typically cast as romantic interests in a typical romantic comedy setting.

Instead of vanishing immediately after the male lead chooses his partner, Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! delves into these young women’s introspection following their unsuccessful pursuit of love. The series particularly excels in this aspect, as Anna, initially depicted as the first loser, evolves to be one of the standout heroines of the year. While her victory with fans might come as a surprise, it’s also far from unexpected.
