The proprietors of The Queen Vic pub, both male (landlords) and female (landladies), will forever be etched in the annals of EastEnders lore, particularly with regard to Den and Angie Watts.
On Christmas Day, there was an unforgettable incident where Den handed Angie divorce documents and chilling said, “Merry Christmas, Angie!”, a phrase that will never be forgotten.
40 years ago, actress Anita Dobson, along with Leslie Grantham, first appeared on EastEnders when it premiered on BBC One. Surprisingly, she didn’t foresee the massive success the show would eventually achieve, as it now marks its 40th anniversary.

When initially asked if she foresaw EastEnders’ immense popularity during her debut, Dobson confessed: “To be honest, not right away as I was simply thankful to have a job, one that lasted for quite some time.
For approximately three months, there was the possibility of extending the contract for an additional 18 months if things went well. This provided me with a stable position, moving on from my days as a freelance actress juggling various roles. It was a relief to have some stability, and I thoroughly enjoyed the work, which became my primary focus.
However, it wasn’t until we moved to the canteen to watch the first episode. When I glanced at Leslie [Grantham], he was standing with his arms crossed, and I could read his expression. He seemed deep in thought, so I looked at him and said, “It’s excellent, isn’t it?
“And that’s when we both kind of realised we were onto something.”
