In the hypothetical sequel to “The Accountant,” it’s clear why Anna Kendrick’s character Dana Cummings was essential for “The Accountant 3.” The original film from 2016 revolved around Christian Wolff (played by Ben Affleck) safeguarding Dana, who had a pivotal role in exposing a conspiracy. Their relationship, which grew and became the emotional core of the movie, was a significant aspect of the storyline. Therefore, it came as a surprise when it was announced that Anna Kendrick would not reappear in “The Accountant 2.”
This sequel neither features Dana nor mentions her explicitly. Given how the first movie concluded, with Dana being safe and receiving valuable paintings from Chris, and both of them embarking on individual journeys, it was expected that their paths might cross again in the sequel. However, the film primarily explores Chris’ relationship with his brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal). Despite her absence, The Accountant 2 underscores the necessity of Kendrick’s character returning for the next installment.
Chris’ Story In The Accountant 2 Is Secretly Connected To Anna Kendrick’s Dana
He’s Searching For What They Had
In the movie The Accountant 2, the theme of seeking connection is a recurring element. Chris is seen making efforts to form relationships in various ways throughout the film. For instance, he attempts speed dating early on, an unexpected move. However, despite his good intentions, the outcomes are not favorable as most women lose interest after listening to his tax tales. Chris does manage to build connections elsewhere, such as by reinforcing his bond with Braxton. The closest romantic connection emerges when Chris meets Angie during Ben Affleck’s line dancing scene.
As I watched the finale of “The Accountant 2”, it was clear that Christian, my favorite character, found some resolution with Braxton. However, he’s far from content. He yearns for someone who not only cares about him but also checks up on him in a more intimate way. In other words, he’s longing for love and romance. It seems to me that this is a feeling sparked by his encounter with Dana.
Their relationship held immense potential, but the passage of time and Christian’s hesitance didn’t allow it to blossom. Now, as Affleck’s character seeks what Dana can provide him, she becomes an essential element for “The Accountant 3”.
Anna Kendrick’s Return For The Accountant 3 Has Already Been Teased
She’s On Board To Return
It’s exciting to hear that Anna Kendrick might reappear in the upcoming “The Accountant 3”. Director Gavin O’Connor hinted at this possibility, saying, “You may not be surprised if you see Dana, played by Anna [Kendrick], in the third movie.” This comes after it was decided to end “The Accountant 2” with Christian still seeking love. O’Connor is keen on developing this aspect of Affleck’s character further in the next installment.
It’s good news that Kendrick appears willing to rejoin her franchise for a comeback after almost a decade. During an interview with Variety, O’Connor revealed they’ve been exchanging texts about the possibilities. The director stated that she is “ready if we want” to return. Given that he has hinted at Dana playing a significant role in continuing Christian’s storyline, it wouldn’t be shocking if she doesn’t appear in The Accountant 3, provided there will be a third movie.
Anna Kendrick Will Work Better With The Franchise After The Accountant 2’s More Comedic Approach
Dana Was Already A Comedic Presence
The possibility of Anna Kendrick returning for ‘The Accountant 3’, instead of ‘The Accountant 2’, might be beneficial for the franchise. The second installment had a distinct narrative, and there was limited room to incorporate Dana. By focusing on the relationship between Christian and Braxton, ‘The Accountant 2’ took a comedic turn, differing from the first film. This shift could enable ‘The Accountant 3’ to capitalize more on Kendrick’s strengths, as her most impactful performances often showcase her comedic talents. She is capable of delivering compelling dramatic performances, but it’s her comedic abilities that truly stand out.
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself grappling with the balance between the serious tone and Anna Kendrick’s comedic flair in “The Accountant.” In the first installment, her character was one of the few humorous elements amidst a more somber backdrop, which at times created a bit of a genre conflict. However, if “The Accountant 3” decides to delve deeper into comedy, as was the case with “The Accountant 2,” this could potentially resolve that issue. The return of Anna Kendrick might even infuse more humor into the film, possibly allowing the sequel to favor comedy over action, and introducing a touch of romance for good measure.
