Anne of Green Gables Anime: Release Date and Episode Count Confirmed

The updated version of the anime adaptation titled “Anne Shirley” based on “Anne of Green Gables” has recently revealed some significant changes. Announced last November, Answer Studio (“The Garden of Words“) is now in charge of this project. The release date and duration of the popular literary character Anne Shirley’s screen time have also been disclosed.

Anne Shirley hails from the beloved series “Anne of Green Gables,” penned by Lucy Maud Montgomery. These novels are situated in Canada during the late 19th century and narrate the story of an 11-year-old orphan girl, who was accidentally adopted by two affluent men seeking a boy to work on their farm, thinking she was a boy.

Anne Shirley Anime Series Releases This April

The fresh anime adaptation of “Anne Shirley” is set to debut this April, first airing on NHK Educational TV in Japan. Spanning 24 episodes across its inaugural season, the show has also unveiled its talented voice cast. Honoka Inoue, known for her work in “Edens Zero,” will give life to Anne Shirley herself. Aya Nakamura from “One Piece” will voice Marilla Cuthbert, while Yasunoei Matsumoto (“Ultraman X”) takes on Matthew Cuthbert, Naoya Miyase (“Beyblade X”) portrays Gilbert Blythe, and Yume Miyamoto (“Mononogatari”) brings Diana Barry to life.

The upcoming anime series is being helmed by Hiroshi Kawamata (known for “Hal’s Fute”), who is also responsible for character design alongside Kenichi Tsuchiya (“The Garden of Words”). As of now, a detailed plot summary for the show remains undisclosed. Nevertheless, it has been announced that the anime will blend narratives from the initial book in the series with certain elements from its subsequent books.

In Lucy Maud Montgomery’s “Anne of Green Gables” series, there are a total of eight books. The upcoming anime series draws inspiration from Montgomery’s works as well as a fresh manga adaptation by Akane Hoshikubo. This manga was published by Kadokawa and premiered on January 5th, 2025.

Anne of Green Gables Has a Long Anime History

It’s worth noting that Anne Shirley isn’t new to being adapted into an anime; in fact, a well-known version boasted some big industry names. Back in 1979, Isao Takahata, one of Studio Ghibli’s founders, helmed the television anime adaptation. Hayao Miyazaki, another renowned figure, took charge of layout and designs for the first 15 episodes of the series.

I’m keeping a close eye on the upcoming anime adaptation of “Anne Shirley,” which is set to debut in Japan this coming April, though the specific date remains undisclosed at present. As of now, there’s no news regarding where the series will be available for streaming outside of Japan. Rest assured, I’ll be sharing more details as we approach the release window in April.
