Anora’s Mikey Madison Reveals Why Film Had No Intimacy Coordinator

As a seasoned observer of the entertainment industry, I must say that this year’s Golden Globe nominations have truly outdone themselves! The diversity and talent on display are a testament to the resilience and creativity of our artists.

Mikey Madison is sharing insight into her on-set experience.

In the recent past, the actress known as Anora, who garnered a 2025 Golden Globe nomination for her performance, sparked intrigue by confessing that no intimacy supervisor was present during the filming of the romantic scenes in the movie.

In the course of their chat, which was featured in Variety’s Actors on Actors series on December 17th, Mikey explained, “I had a decision to make, and that was whether or not to work with an intimacy coordinator, as the filmmakers presented me with that option.

In a different wording: The 25-year-old actress mentioned that rather than employing an intimacy coordinator to plan out sexually explicit scenes and protect the interests of actors and crew members, she decided to keep such scenes limited, permitting only the film’s director Sean Baker, his wife and co-producer Samantha Quan, and Mikey’s co-star Mark Eydelshteyn (Ivan) in the room during each take for filming.

Mikey explained, “We managed to make it much more efficient and speed up the production process significantly. Instead of including lengthy sex scenes, we’ve opted for more suggestive shots, which Sean often jokes about. I believe there’s also a good deal of humor woven into these scenes. Overall, it was a very rewarding experience for me.

Regarding why Mikey eventually turned down the offer, the actress from Better Things shared that it allowed her to better understand her character. In her own words, “My character is a sex worker, and since Sean’s films have always been known for their authenticity, I felt drawn to fully immerse myself in that world.

Oh my goodness, let me tell you all about Anora! It’s a captivating tale that follows a Brooklyn-based sex worker, our protagonist, who crosses paths with none other than the son of a powerful Russian oligarch, a man named Mark (Ivan in the story). This chance encounter leads to an extraordinary love story, one that has me absolutely hooked!

Mikey remarked about Anora, “She often adorns her body like a theatrical costume, if you will.” He explained that she portrays herself in a highly sexualized manner, as it’s her chosen profession and necessity. Thus, as an actress, he approached the role with understanding, treating it as just another job, which made him feel at ease.

After the discussion, I found myself among those with conflicting sentiments regarding Mikey’s choice. Some fans argued that an intimacy coordinator isn’t exclusively appointed for the actors’ sake, but to ensure a respectful and safe environment for all involved in such scenes.

One user pointed out, “Aren’t intimacy coordinators designed to safeguard EVERYONE on set, and not just the actors in a specific scene?” Essentially, they are questioning if it is equitable for actors to make decisions about safety measures for the entire crew.

Some spectators felt it was inappropriate for the up-and-coming talent, Mikey, to have been offered that choice. To quote one individual, “That’s crazy! Wouldn’t you need a spotter for such a risky move?

Another wrote, “A movie about a sex worker with no IC is crazy.”

others found no issue with her choice to step back, as one individual inquired, “What’s so bizarre about it? As long as she felt at ease on set, that’s the only thing that truly matters, isn’t it?

Another commented, “She’s wonderful, and it shows great skill as an authentic actress that she opted not to use an intimacy coordinator.
