In this sequel, set five years after A Simple Favor, Emily (played by Blake Lively) invites Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) and her former spouse, Sean (Henry Golding), to her wedding in Italy. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, director Feig discussed the reasoning behind Sean’s demise in the film Another Simple Favor. He disclosed that the concept of Sean being Charity’s initial victim originated when Golding expressed reservations about reprising the role of a pushover in the follow-up and asked for something “grisly.” Furthermore, Feig mentioned that the shower scene held a real-life crime connection, as seen in his subsequent remarks.

Initially in the script, he made an appearance, yet he seemed to be constantly overwhelmed. During my conversation with Henry, he expressed uncertainty about repeating the same thing. However, when we proposed the concept of him being the initial target, his enthusiasm sparked.

Sean’s change seemed organic. His life, which was wrecked first by being with Emily and later entangled with Stephanie, left him feeling like a mere pawn being manipulated. It seemed to be a genuine and smooth development.

Initially, our writers wrote some harsh and unkind remarks for him, which made me concerned he might not participate in the game. However, when I explained it to him, he responded with enthusiasm, saying he wanted to portray a truly villainous character. Consequently, he took on the role with relish. Moreover, Henry contributed numerous lines that were extremely gruesome and shocking. He kept coming up with these lines unexpectedly, leaving me astonished. When he asked for his death scene to be particularly gory and distressing, I agreed to make it happen as per his request.

The man is eager to take a risk, and I’m someone who embraces extreme ideas. If someone suggests doing something daring, count me in! It’s been a while since I watched an exciting shower scene in a movie that ended tragically. And there was an element of excitement playing guessing games like, “Will it be like ‘Psycho’? Will he get stabbed?” When we were preparing the scene, and he was getting injected with a syringe, my producing partner Laura Fischer pointed out, “They often say in podcasts that they can’t trace it if you inject someone under their nail.” That’s why I decided to place the needle at the front of his finger instead.

In “Another Simple Journey,” it’s largely due to Golding that Sean experienced a profound journey. Unlike the events of “A Simple Favor,” where Sean found himself stuck between Emily and Stephanie, the sequel delved into Sean’s emotional state five years after Emily’s arrest. His life was dramatically altered, and he was compelled to travel to Italy for Emily’s wedding, which added depth to the character’s tragic ending that unfolded in due course.

In the same interview, Feig additionally emphasized that Sean’s evolution into a troubled and alcoholic individual remained consistent across the script revisions. Moreover, Golding was instrumental in crafting several of Sean’s film lines as well. It seems he favored the plot twist of Sean meeting an untimely death, possibly due to it providing a surprising climax that significantly enhances the shock value of “Another Simple Favor” by adding a dramatic turn to its predecessor.

In the film “Another Simple Favor,” it was initially believed that Charity, the triplet of Emily and Hope, had perished. However, this turned out to be untrue, and surprisingly, she was the one who murdered Sean in the shower. Prior to this shocking revelation, Sean’s demise served as the catalyst for Emily becoming the prime suspect, as he managed to recognize the culprit before succumbing to his injuries and falling face-first into the glass. This change, spearheaded by Golding, was instrumental in setting this series of events in motion.

Sean’s demise significantly amplified the risks associated with Charity and highlighted her perilous nature. To add to that, his death was arguably one of the most heart-wrenching incidents in both “Simple Favor” series and remains particularly unforgettable.
