Anthony Mackie Addresses Award Season Snubs: “Captain America is My Oscar”

In an open conversation with Esquire magazine, Anthony Mackie, Marvel’s latest shield-bearer and soon-to-be Captain America, has turned perceived snubs at awards shows into a strong message about recognition within Hollywood. He stated, “This isn’t something that happened overnight.” Reflecting on his career and the challenges faced in gaining industry recognition, Mackie, who is gearing up for his first theatrical outing as Captain America in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ this month, also embraced his trailblazing role as the first African American to portray Captain America. Mackie was direct about his experiences at awards shows when discussing his industry journey.

He finds it fitting whenever award seasons arrive, as there are at least four roles he’s played that could have been nominated for awards like the Golden Globe, an Oscar, or an Emmy. However, he shared with the media outlet that “Captain America” serves as his Oscar, since he’s been underappreciated in his career on numerous occasions.

Mackie’s character as the renowned hero carries implications that reach beyond mere self-affirmation. He underscored the profound cultural resonance of his selection, expressing that it’s equally crucial for young black children to witness a Black Captain America as it is for their white counterparts.

As a child, my preferred superhero was green. This wasn’t about race or ethnicity; it was more about him always standing for justice and goodness. It’s essential for children of all races to have role models they can admire, regardless of their physical appearance. Such figures demonstrate that being a good person isn’t defined by what others perceive them to be, but rather by their actions and character,” he explained.

As I embarked on my Marvel Studios journey back in 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, it’s become clear that this role could potentially span two decades within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, I must admit, the weight of such a high-profile part isn’t lost on me. After all, as Sam Wilson, I’m the sole character without superpowers amidst a universe teeming with extraordinary abilities.

As we move forward, I acknowledge the immense pressure that comes with donning the Captain America shield. But fear not, for I’ve got a solid decade under my belt and jokingly declared, “I don’t fancy being a sixty-year-old Captain America.” Here’s to the next chapter in this incredible journey!

As a diehard cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement! You’ve got the two thrilling Avengers films under your belt, and if luck is on our side, there’s another Captain America adventure coming up! And let’s not forget the exciting standalone movies that will fit right in!

In my critique, I’d like to share some intriguing ideas that director Mackie floated regarding potential guest appearances in this film. However, it’s essential to clarify that these are merely suggestions, not confirmed cameos.

Looks like it’s Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four! What brings you here?” he exclaimed, “Though I must admit, I wouldn’t mind avoiding ending up as an elderly Captain America.

Directed by Julius Onah and featuring Harrison Ford, the movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World” is scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day, 2025.
