Anthony Mackie Reveals When He’ll Stop Playing Captain America in the MCU

Actor Anthony Mackie, known for his role as Captain America in “Captain America: Brave New World,” shares his planned departure date from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a chat with Esquire, Mackie shared insights about his future in the franchise, mentioning that he aims to stay for approximately ten years. He also speculated on potential upcoming projects where Captain America might appear over the next decade, including the two Avengers movies, possible additional Captain America films, and even cameos like Spider-Man or Fantastic Four.

Mackie shared that the origin of this plan comes from his aspiration to explore different character opportunities as he grows older. Put simply, he expressed that he doesn’t wish to portray Captain America at the age of sixty.

In 2014, Mackie made his first appearance as Sam Wilson/Falcon in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” Throughout the Infinity Saga, his character grew particularly close to Steve Rogers. Following “The Winter Soldier,” Mackie reappeared in five films before starring alongside Sebastian Stan in the television series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” This series, set after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” follows Sam as he takes up the Captain America mantle, assuming the role left by Rogers.

In February, fans will get to witness Sam in “Captain America: Brave New World”, which is his debut as the main superhero character on the big screen. This film is anticipated to rake in a significant amount at the box office during Presidents’ Day Weekend, possibly earning over $100 million within U.S. territories. The movies Sam hinted at in his statements, namely “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars“, are planned for release in 2026 and 2027 respectively.

It’s clear that being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been a great experience for Mackie, but it’s natural that he may eventually want to move on from the franchise. One reason actors enjoy their profession is the chance to explore diverse characters; repeatedly revisiting the same character might become monotonous creatively. Although Mackie has managed to work on various projects outside of Marvel, MCU films are significant endeavors, and with Sam Wilson’s role growing more prominent, these productions could consume much of Mackie’s time in the coming years. Furthermore, these projects can be physically demanding on their actors, and it seems Mackie wishes to retire before he becomes too old for the action-packed character.

Marvel hasn’t revealed any release dates past the debut of “Avengers: Secret Wars,” so fans might have to wait to find out the studio’s plans. If “Brave New World” turns out to be popular, it wouldn’t shock anyone if another Captain America film was greenlit. The character is one of Marvel’s most iconic figures, and it seems Sam Wilson will play a significant part throughout the Multiverse Saga. It’ll be intriguing to see what lies ahead for Captain America as he takes on the leadership role within the Avengers and eventually selects his successor.
