Anya Taylor-Joy Offers Major Update for Dune: Messiah (But When Does It Film?)

As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that Anya Taylor-Joy is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing actresses in Hollywood today. Her performance in Dune: Part Two was nothing short of mesmerizing, and her enigmatic character Alia Atreides left audiences eagerly awaiting more.

In 2022, when “Dune: Part Two” graced the silver screen, one of the most talked-about scenes was Anya Taylor-Joy’s brief appearance. Director Denis Villeneuve had tried to keep it a secret, but once word got out, fans began speculating. Upon release, we discovered that the star of “Furiosa” had taken on an unexpected role – Alia Atreides, the younger sister of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul. This character was hinted at in Frank Herbert’s books, but with the director making some adjustments for the adaptation, it will be intriguing to see how her part impacts the ongoing storyline of the franchise. To add to the anticipation, the actress has dropped a hint about the upcoming “Dune: Messiah,” which is now in production.

At CCXP, Collider spoke to Anya Taylor-Joy about her character in the upcoming Dune sequel. She expressed her excitement about being involved in the project, stating that she’s a fan of everyone associated with it and can hardly wait for its release. It seems that Taylor-Joy was previously unacquainted with Dune: Messiah, but her knowledge appears to have grown since then. Her enthusiasm about the topic appeared palpable, considering the tremendous success of the two Dune films. The latest installment has achieved impressive feats, grossing $714.4 million globally and receiving high praise from critics in 2024.

Taylor-Joy had expressed beforehand about her experience of being cast, disclosing that she had long desired the role and adjusted her schedule to make it possible. During the filming of Dune: Part Two, she was engrossed in filming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but Villeneuve successfully negotiated a deal with Warner Bros. to ensure her participation. Even with a brief portrayal of Alia in one of Paul’s visions, viewers could see she might have a substantial role in the sequel. Once Dune: Messiah was officially announced, it became apparent just how crucial the protagonist’s sister could be to the narrative.

In the sequel, viewers discovered that her character wasn’t alive at the time, but the director has hinted at a leap in time for the following film. Villeneuve, who is known for being secretive, has merely suggested that fans should anticipate seeing significantly more of Alia in the next installment.

For Dune enthusiasts, there’s a potential delay as Villeneuve has hinted at working on another project first before returning to Arrakis. Warner Bros., however, revealed a secret production from the director, scheduled for release in December 2026. Although fans speculated it could be Dune: Messiah, the director himself stressed in an October interview the considerable time and resources needed to film a movie as expansive as Dune.

When asked about her future projects, Taylor-Joy casually disclosed that she will be engaged for the subsequent year and a half, which means she’ll be free to work again in a year and a half from now. This indicates that, amidst her various obligations, she has skillfully made room for continued activity.

Dune: Messiah is currently without an official release date.
