Netflix recently unveiled an exciting trailer for their upcoming mini-series titled Apple Cider Vinegar. This intriguing sneak peek not only generates anticipation but also confirms the launch date for this project, with Kaitlyn Dever, known for her roles in The Last of Us and Dopesick, taking center stage.
In the realm of cinema, I’ve found a narrative that resonates deeply with my love for truthful storytelling. This tale draws inspiration from a social media sensation named Belle Gibson, who captivated audiences in the early 2010s. She garnered a substantial following by sharing her alleged battle against terminal cancer, which she claimed to manage through wellness practices such as diet, exercise, and alternative medicine.
Initially, it was believed that Gibson suffered from cancer, but it was later uncovered that she had fabricated the illness altogether. This startling truth led to the collapse of her online empire and extravagant lifestyle.
In Apple Cider Vinegar, the character of Belle, portrayed by Dever, encounters rivalry with an old acquaintance, Milla (acted by Alycia Debnam-Carey). This rivalry arises as Milla shares her personal cancer battle through online posts.
This story unfolds during Instagram’s early days, as Apple Cider Vinegar follows the journey of two young women battling life-threatening diseases. They embark on a quest to heal themselves through health and wellness practices, and in doing so, inspire their global online followers.
If everything presented here were authentic, it would be immensely motivating. However, this narrative, though it seems real, is rooted in a falsehood. It chronicles the ascent and decline of a wellness empire; the society that constructed it and the individuals who dismantled it.
You can watch the preview for Apple Cider Vinegar right here, before its premiere on Netflix, which is set for Thursday, 6th February 2025.
Previously, Dever has received praise for her performances in gritty, fact-based series like “Unbelievable” and “Dopesick.” In the near future, she will make an appearance in “The Last of Us season 2,” where she takes on the role of a fresh character named Abby, who was introduced in the second installment of the game franchise.
In addition to Apple Cider Vinegar, the cast features Aisha Dee from The Bold Type, Tilda Cobham-Hervey known for The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, Ashley Zukerman recognized in Succession, Phoenix Raei starring in The Night Agent, and Essie Davis who played a role in Game of Thrones.
The television show was developed by Samantha Strauss (known for Nine Perfect Strangers), in collaboration with Anya Beyersdorf (recognized for The Twelve) and Angela Betzien (acclaimed for Total Control). Jeffrey Walker, best known as the director of The Artful Dodger, is at the helm for this project.
