Severance Season 2 Opening Scene Description

In the premiere of Severance Season 2, a compilation of voice-overs from key characters at the Lumon corporation is shown first, taken from the end of Season 1. Mark Scout (Adam Scott) briefly regained consciousness to share with his sister Devon (Jen Tullock) that he now believes his wife Gemma, whom he thought was deceased, is actually living under a different identity at Lumon as Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman). Irving Bailiff (John Turturro) learns that the person he had feelings for, Burt (Christopher Walken), is already married and leading a happy domestic life. Lastly, Helly Riggs (Britt Lower) was shocked to discover she is actually Helena Eagan, the ruthless daughter of Lumon’s CEO who supports the severance process. “Helly” attempted to expose the dark truths about severance to a crowd of Lumon executives at a gala event.

In the second season of “Severance,” the intriguing cliffhangers from before won’t be immediately resolved. Instead, we find Mark back in his usual Lumon elevator, looking as if he’s being subjected to a brainwashing process. The doors open and a musical sequence/montage commences, depicting Mark frantically darting through the corridors like a confused rodent in a labyrinth, accompanied by groovy jazz tunes. This frenzied chase concludes with Mark entering a lounge area, filled with green decor against the backdrop of endless white walls, where he stands pondering. A chilling scene then unfolds, featuring a shadowy figure standing behind him outside the doorway, only to vanish when Mark turns around. Afterward, Mark exits the lounge and resumes his thoughtful stroll through the maze-like hallways, eventually reaching his designated workspace, “Macrodata Refinement.

As I step into the MR section, I’m warmly welcomed by three new faces nestled in my usual shared workspace with Burt, Helly, and Dylan. One of them, an elderly gentleman, introduces himself as Mark W., while the Latino man, Dario R., exchanges words with a girl, Gwendolyn Y., in Spanish. The older man, trying to prevent any mix-ups, asks if I’d prefer a different nickname. Just then, our supervisor, Seth Milchick, enters with an air of tranquility, quite unlike his previous appearances. He extends a friendly hand to me and says it’s been a while since we last crossed paths, welcoming me back with a bunch of blue balloons.

The Severance title logo appears on a white screen.

The narrative shifts back to Milchick and Mark wandering through corridors, with Mark carrying the balloons, while Milchick brushes off all inquiries regarding the whereabouts of his previous colleagues. It becomes apparent through their conversation that the small act of defiance by Mark at the end of Season 1 occurred five months earlier, and he remains clueless about any subsequent events. Later, Milchick introduces Mark to some new staff members, including Miss Huang, who serves as Milchick’s administrative assistant in his new position as interim manager, filling in for Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette).

Milchick discloses that Helly and Irving succeeded in bringing their internal selves into the external world; Dylan discovered about the rebellion much later through his external persona; and now, the team from MR is well-known for spearheading the Severance transformation movement. Milchick expresses regret over manipulating Mark, yet accuses Harmony of being the true source of toxicity within the company. He depicts Cobel as developing an unhealthy interest in Mark across both his internal and external personas – acting as his superior at work while presenting herself as a friendly neighbor Mrs. Selvig in the outside world.

Mark notices there’s no information about his team being disclosed, and Milchick explains that none of the previous team members chose to come back to work – however, it was Mark’s alter ego who returned. Mark remains skeptical and desires to hear directly from his team members, but Milchick vaguely warns him that it can’t be done and urges him to “have fun with your balloons.

Indeed, the enigma surrounding “Severance” Season 2 is gradually unveiling itself – and this tantalizing sneak peek undoubtedly reels us in once more!

Severance Season 2 premieres on Apple TV+ on January 17th.
