Apples Never Fall author explains how TV series ending differs from book

As a seasoned film enthusiast with an uncanny knack for predicting plot twists (and occasionally being wrong), I must say that Apples Never Fall has left me both entertained and bewildered. The rollercoaster ride of emotions it took us on was reminiscent of a scenic route through the Alps – exhilarating, nerve-wracking, and ultimately leaving you wanting more.

If, like us, you’ve been regularly watching BBC One on Saturdays at night, it’s likely that you haven’t been able to tear yourself away from the screen during Apples Never Fall.

Over the course of several weeks, the intricate, labyrinthine mystery unraveled, leading us through a series of unexpected twists and turns much like a rollercoaster ride. This emotional journey had us trying to discover the truth behind Joy Delaney’s (Annette Bening) fate.

Following her last cheerful ride on her bicycle, we found only a trail of blood on the ground, with no sign of Joy anywhere. Subsequently, her family was suddenly under the public limelight, but it didn’t take long for them to reveal cracks in their supposedly idyllic facade.

At the close of the series, Joy reconnects with her loved ones, miraculously alive. Interestingly, during her moments of distress, she sought comfort from the mysterious character Savannah, played by Georgia Flood, yet another time.

However, it wasn’t long before it became clear that Savannah had been deceiving everyone about her true identity, as she was actually pursuing a revenge plot against the Delaney family due to a personal grudge. The series concluded with Savannah causing an accident involving Joy in her car, leaving Joy gravely injured on the roadside, while Savannah herself managed to escape without harm.

In terms of Savannah’s storyline, it leaves a lot up to interpretation because her grudge wasn’t fully settled and her behavior remains unpredictable. Interestingly enough, the conclusion of the TV series differs significantly from the original book written by Liane Moriarty.

She mentioned: “In the book, Savannah’s story was more extensive, but I realize adaptations involve modifications. At times, I even appreciate viewing sections I’m unfamiliar with because it allows me to experience them like a regular audience member.

“They’re just two different things, different art forms.”

When Moriarty’s work gets adapted into a TV show, viewers often compare it to the popular HBO series, Big Little Lies, as both are adaptations of Moriarty’s novels.

However, Moriarty might have preferred if the comparison didn’t arise when watching her stories play out on-screen. She expressed: “Yes, each work could potentially thrive independently, but given the massive success of Big Little Lies, it seems inevitable that comparisons are drawn.

In an ideal world, each of my books could stand independently. Since they’re separate stories altogether, I wouldn’t mind if they weren’t compared to one another.

Apples Never Fall is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
