The Winter Soldier” and especially “Furious 7” have redefined April as hallowed ground where box office records can be set. Remarkably, two of the largest domestic opening weekends on record took place in April.
With April’s increasing profitability over the past few years, it’s worth pondering about the highest-grossing April ever at the domestic box office. This could come as a shock when you look at the total figures, but this trend just underscores how remarkably profitable April has become in recent times. Once seen as an underdog among box office months, April is now a territory where blockbusters can flourish.
Avengers: Endgame Unlocked New April Box Office Heights
In April 2018, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ helped make it the first April in history to earn over $1 billion domestically, with a total of $1.026 billion. Exactly one year later, April 2019 just barely surpassed April 2018 to become the biggest April ever in North America, largely due to ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ extraordinary performance. In its final weekend of April 2019, ‘Endgame’ set a new record for the largest domestic opening with $357.1 million. Despite only being in theaters for five days during April, ‘Endgame’ accounted for an impressive $427.09 million of the month’s total gross, which is roughly 41% of the entire month’s earnings.
This month, “Shazam!” earned $132 million and “Captain Marvel” added another $61.39 million at the box office. Other new releases such as “The Curse of La Llorona” and “The Best of Enemies” didn’t have a blockbuster performance, but they didn’t need massive earnings to make April 2019 a historic month at the box office. In fact, just two years prior in April 2017, with “The Fate of the Furious” earning an astounding $193.26 million that month, the total domestic gross for April 2017 was an impressive $811.66 million – a first for a single April to exceed $800 million. However, this record-breaking figure was soon surpassed by the allure of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
It must have been quite surprising for movie studio executives to see multiple Aprils exceeding $1 billion at the domestic box office, considering that as recently as 2008, April only made $500.44 million, and even in 2013 it managed just $634.36 million. However, the release of two highly anticipated Avengers sequels transformed the typical April box office trends. Just a year before COVID-19 forced closures on cinemas and drastically changed the domestic box office scene, April 2019 broke all previous records for North American earnings in April, making it the highest-grossing April ever.
That April Mario Gave Endgame a Run for Its Money
From April 2019 onwards, no other month has managed to surpass the box office success of “Avengers: Endgame.” However, there’s a possibility that “A Minecraft Movie” could challenge this record in April 2025. Interestingly, April 2023 nearly broke this record with an earnings of $899.48 million, with approximately half of that ($490.85 million) coming from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” This film exceeded expectations for the performance of video game movies at the domestic box office. No other new release in April 2023 earned more than $50 million, suggesting that if another significant movie had been released in April 2023, it might have dethroned April 2019 as the most successful April ever.
Despite the numerous obstacles the domestic box office has encountered throughout the 2020s, the impressive $899.48 million earned in April 2023 is noteworthy. Unfortunately, struggles persist into 2025 with films like “Snow White” and “Mickey 17” underperforming. Remarkably, however, April 2023 demonstrated the potential for box office returns that mirror pre-COVID levels. As one of the highest-grossing months since movie theaters closed in March 2020, the April 2023 box office collection represents a significant victory for theaters operating within such a challenging environment.
It’s becoming increasingly clear that April is now capable of matching box office revenues typically seen in June or July, traditionally strong months for movie releases. Blockbusters like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Avengers: Endgame” have pushed April to unprecedented heights, challenging the notion that it’s a ‘burn-off’ month. The transformation of the April box office in recent years is evident, with its record-breaking domestic revenues standing as testament to this shift.
