As a massive fan of both anime and the League of Legends universe, I can’t help but be in awe of Fortiche‘s creation of “Arcane.” The anticipation for Jinx and Vi’s return in season two is palpable, and it’s fascinating to delve into the inspirations behind this groundbreaking animated series.
Arcane has earned its place as one of the best original animated series in Netflix’s roster by creating a riveting story in the realm of the video game, League of Legends. Set to release its second season this November, it should come as no surprise that the studio response for the animated show, Fortiche, is more than willing to chat prior to Jinx and Vi’s return. In chatting with Crunchyroll, one of Fortiche’s founders took the opportunity to break down several influences that helped make Arcane the smash success that it has become.
In a recent interview, Fortiche’s co-founder Pascal Charrue acknowledged that Arcane was deeply influenced by anime masterpieces like “20th Century Boys,” “Paprika,” “Perfect Blue,” and others. At Fortiche, we derive immense inspiration from the anime universe due to its unique blend of intricate storytelling and stunning visuals. Characters such as Jinx bring to mind visionaries like Satoshi Kon, who delves into themes of paranoia and identity crisis, catering to mature audiences, which resonates with Fortiche’s objectives. We are similarly influenced by mangakas such as Naoki Urasawa, renowned for his nuanced character development in series like “Yawara!,” “Monster,” and “20th Century Boys.” In our work at Fortiche, we strive to give equal importance to every character, ensuring that they contribute significantly to the intricately crafted worlds of our narratives.
Arcane’s Non-Anime Influences
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “I, personally, was drawn in by the depth of inspiration behind ‘Arcane.’ Anime and manga weren’t the only sources for Fortiche. They looked beyond the world of animation and drew from live-action movies, too. Directors such as John Woo left a significant impact on their storytelling and action sequences with their intricately choreographed fight scenes and deep emotional connections. The blend of Eastern and Western influences, along with live-action cinema, enables us to create animations that are visually breathtaking and narratively captivating, appealing to audiences worldwide.”
During the same interview, the co-founder of Fortiche expressed his intention to transform the acclaimed manga “Vagabond,” created by Takehiko Inoue, into an anime adaptation. Known for its complexity and intricacy, “Vagabond” has been thought to be difficult, if not impossible, to bring to life as a TV series. As for “Arcane,” Fortiche may have hinted that season 2 would mark the end, but they have announced that potential spin-offs are on the horizon.
