Ariana Grande Responds to Fan Criticism Over Her Wicked Casting

As an ardent fan of musical theater and Ariana Grande, I must confess that when I first heard she was cast as Glinda in the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked, I too found myself questioning the decision. The image of the pop sensation belting out “Thank U, Next” seemed a far cry from the ethereal, bubbly character of Glinda we all know and love.

Ariana Grande understands that she wasn’t necessarily a popular choice to play Glinda in Wicked.

31-year-old actress shared insights into her past association with the popular Broadway musical, as well as her enthusiasm for portraying the affectionate “good” witch who adores pink, alongside Cynthia Erivo who played Elphaba in the movie version.

Ariana stated during the November 1st episode of the Sentimental Men podcast, “It must be something that is earned, and indeed, it’s wickedness that commands the highest respect – that’s something that truly needs to be earned!

However, she understands why Wicked fans might not welcome the casting news.

In response to “Side to Side,” she might have expressed similar sentiments. She would likely have exclaimed, “What in the world? Just kill me! I’ve been waiting 20 years for this. Kill me.” As a fan from an external perspective, knowing only about “7 Rings,” she would have said, “That’s total nonsense.” In essence, she understands the disappointment.

The Grammy winner also admitted to being anxious over living up to expectations.

She mentioned that she experienced some initial apprehension, perhaps due to doubts about her capabilities or concerns about whether she could meet expectations, or questioning her own decisions.

The “thank u, next” singer expressed that while others may view her fame as a benefit, she personally saw it differently.

She clarified, “I believe it’s quite the contrary; in some aspects, it might work against me. When someone has a highly exaggerated image of them in public and is known for just one aspect, will they be able to shed that image and blend into a new role?

In 2021, Ariana underwent multiple auditions for a much-awaited role. Interestingly, she also received the endorsement of actress Kristin Chenoweth, who initially played the character on stage. Ariana revealed that Kristin herself became emotional when Ariana mentioned her intention to try out for Glinda.

Ariana reminisced about her friend saying, “I had been eagerly anticipating this moment. I care for you deeply and have faith in you, dear friend. Go ahead and do what you do best. You’re incredibly witty and intuitive, a trait not many know about. You’re going to take them by surprise.

Wicked hits theaters Nov. 22.
