As a tech enthusiast who’s been following the gaming industry for decades, it’s fascinating to witness the resilience and adaptability of developers like CD Projekt RED. I remember the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, filled with bugs and glitches that left many gamers disappointed. Yet, the team’s relentless dedication to fixing the game and eventually releasing Phantom Liberty has not only revived the game but also propelled it to new heights.
We’ve got some big updates on two massive gaming franchises.
CD Projekt RED, a Polish game publisher, announced on Tuesday that their title Cyberpunk 2077 has now surpassed 30 million copies sold. Moreover, the expansion pack for the game, titled Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has also reached eight million in sales. Since October 2023, there’s been a five-million increase in the base game’s sales, and since November 2023, Phantom Liberty has almost sold an additional four million copies.
In addition to providing this sales update, CD Projekt announced that the team working on Project Polaris, known as the code name for the upcoming Witcher game, has transitioned fully into the development phase.
Michał Nowakowski, co-CEO of CD Projekt, is delighted to share that a few weeks ago, the Polaris team completed preproduction and transitioned into full-scale production – the phase with the most demanding workload. The team’s efforts on this project have been impressive so far, and Michał would like to express his gratitude for their commitment.
Analysis: With an impressive turnaround complete, CD Projekt is prepped for the future
Cyberpunk 2077 has faced quite a journey to achieve its current acclaim. Its production history was marked by challenges, as the release date was set ahead of schedule, particularly for last-gen consoles.
After numerous years of fixes and enhancements, and a surge in popularity due to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – an exceptional animated series and one of the finest video game adaptations – it’s now widely regarded as one of the best games out there. This reputation grew even stronger with the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, an expansion that delves into a gripping spy thriller narrative, drawing V deeper into a tangled web of secrets.
Now that Cyberpunk 2077 has made a comeback, it will be intriguing to watch the developments with the upcoming Witcher game. At present, details are scant, but we do know that this game is intended as the beginning of a new trilogy. It also appears certain that Geralt of Rivia, the White Wolf and central character in the initial three games, will not be featured in this one.
Beyond their current focus, CD Projekt RED is also engaged in several other projects, some developed internally and others in collaboration with external studios. A team within CD Projekt RED’s Boston office is busy working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, with the same team that successfully delivered Phantom Liberty leading the charge. Simultaneously, Fool’s Theory – a studio founded by ex-CD Projekt RED developers – is joining forces with CD Projekt RED to reimagine the original Witcher game.
