Assassin’s Creed Movie Director Pitches Mad Max Prequel Idea

As a film enthusiast who has grown up with the iconic Mad Max franchise, I can wholeheartedly express my enthusiasm for Justin Kurzel’s proposal for a prequel. Having been influenced by the original films, his curiosity about the world before the first Mad Max movie resonates with me deeply. The idea of exploring that era, particularly in the capable hands of an Australian director like Kurzel, is tantalizing.

Director Justin Kurzel expresses a desire for a prequel to the “Mad Max” series, contingent on the franchise’s future direction. Kurzel has experience integrating into established franchises, and as an Australian, he is drawn to George Miller’s renowned post-apocalyptic saga. In a recent interview with Collider, he shared his imaginative vision of delving into the wastelands prior to the events depicted in the first “Mad Max” film released in 1979.

Director Kurzel has often pondered over the intrigue of the world depicted before the initial Mad Max movie, particularly the era of the Nightrider. He’s always found himself eager to engage Miller about the prospect of exploring a pre-Mad Max 1 timeline. This is an area that has consistently sparked his curiosity due to the profound impact the original film had on him. The Mad Max series is truly remarkable, yet he can’t help but be captivated by the events leading up to the first movie, given its detailed setup and the fascinating period in Australian history it represents.

Initially, the Mad Max series started as a modest action movie with a sprinkle of sci-fi elements. However, it has since evolved into an intricate post-apocalyptic universe that is renowned in media. To date, all five movies in this franchise have been directed and co-written by George Miller, with the exception of the third film, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which was also helmed by George Ogilvie. Despite rumors, Miller has not officially announced plans to hand over the directorial responsibilities to another filmmaker. Interestingly, he recently expressed to Collider that he is considering making a prequel, titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, following its success.

George Miller’s Plans for Mad Max

Miller explained that the prequel will delve into the extensive background he’s developed while crafting both “Fury Road” and “Furiosa.” He stated, “To effectively narrate the events of ‘Fury Road,’ which transpire over a brief timeframe, one could argue that the initial act of ‘Fury Road’ and its final act almost unfold in real-time over three days to convey the story swiftly. Along this narrative journey, every individual involved in making the film – not just the car designers, but also the set designers, prop makers, and everyone else – needed a deep understanding of the background to ensure the storyline remained consistent.

In actuality, prior to her introduction in Fury Road, we had to compose the tale of Furiosa spanning 18 years. Similarly, the account of Max’s year, which takes place before his appearance in Fury Road, was also penned by us. We have already written that narrative and turned it into a novella; Nico Lathouris and I were the authors of this work, but we haven’t shared it yet.

Should Miller consider replacing the director of his war rig, Kurzel wouldn’t be alone in seeking that role. While Kurzel gained recognition for his 2016 film adaptation of ‘Assassin’s Creed’, it received mediocre reviews at best and a sequel was ultimately scrapped. Currently, Kurzel is marketing his upcoming historical crime thriller, ‘The Order’, which will soon be streamable on Prime Video. Meanwhile, the ‘Mad Max’ series can currently be found streaming on Max.
