Assassin’s Creed Shadows: All Kofun Locations

In the game Assassin’s Creed Shadows, just like other RPG-style games Ubisoft has been putting out lately, there is a wealth of optional content for players to uncover and complete for various prizes. Among these hidden gems in this new installment are mysterious chests known as Kofuns. This guide will help you locate them and reveal the secrets buried within.

All Kofun Locations & Solutions

In the game, there are numerous hidden and plunderable tombs known as “kofuns.” Some of these tombs play a role in the storyline, meaning the game will guide you directly to at least one without requiring additional help. With this in mind, let me share details about the other tombs you can explore on your own.

Kofuns Near Izumi Settsu – Three Kofuns | Yasuke

close to the Izumi Settsu region lie three distinct burial mounds, or kofuns. To locate them precisely, take a look at the map image provided for guidance on your travel destinations. Feel free to select one of the three to kick off your treasure hunt.

As a fan exploring these ancient kofuns, you’ll encounter numerous vases painted a fiery red and laden with explosive power. These will be essential for bypassing doorways barricaded by heaps of wooden and stone debris. Fortunately, there are also sturdy wooden shelves strategically placed to aid your ascent. Just pull them out into the open when needed, providing you with a solid platform to leap upon and surmount these obstacles.

  • Makino Kurumazuka Kofun – This location has a legendary chest that you can loot. Outside is a red explosive vase that you can use to break into the kofun. There will be more red vases inside to help you go through the paths blocked by rubble, and it is fairly straightforward.
  • Takagi Kofun – This kofun has a lot of crawlspaces that you need to go through, and there may be a few really weak enemies to deal with inside. Just like all the others, look for the rubble walls and blow them up with vases until you reach the end.
  • Megalithic Vault – Just like the other kofuns, you will be met with tight hallways and some wooden panels to move around to allow for some parkour. Take note of a hole in the wall beside a chest, as you will need to shoot a red vase in it to reach the legendary chest past the room full of statues.

Kofuns In Yamashiro & Tamba – Two Kofuns (One Each) | Naoe

In the areas of Tamba and Yamashiro, which are adjacent regions, there’s a single kofun located in each. Take a look at the map image provided to help guide your journey to both of these locations. Set off towards either region to begin your exploration.

  • Chasuriyama Kofun (Tamba) – Just swing and climb your way to the very end of the cave, which is essentially just a long hallway full of parkouring. At the end, you will find the legendary chest after a long flight of stairs.
  • Ancient Tomb of Nanjo (Yamashiro) – Take a leap of faith into the water down below to start your search. Once you reach an open area overlooked by two horse statues, you will want to go to the north and keep following the path in that direction. There will be a lot of lesser chests along the way to the legendary one.

Kofuns Near the Omi Region – One Kofun | Yasuke

In the vicinity of the Omi region, marked on the map, you’ll find a kofun that can be cleared by playing as Yasuke. To locate it precisely, have a look at the map provided, which shows its position between the regions of Omi and Iga.

The Azuchi Hyotanyama Kofun is essentially a typical kofun with relatively simple adversaries that you’ll need to eliminate as you advance. Towards the end, when constructing a parkour bridge using the wooden shelves, there will be a red vase situated near the entrance on the ground.

Pick up the red vase and hurl it towards the pile of debris located at the far end of the room. Doing so should open the way to the chamber housing the famous treasure chest, but keep in mind that a couple of guards are posted there.

Kofuns In Wakasa – One Kofun | Naoe

Just a bit further from the last location, you’ll encounter a single kofun within the Wakasa region. For more precise guidance, take a look at the map image provided below. Once there, utilize Naoe as your guide to navigate through the cave.

In that location, you’ll find another simple cave system for you to traverse. As you advance, you’ll encounter several adversaries to defeat, but given your current strength, these opponents should not present much of a challenge.

At the specified spot, you’ll come across another uncomplicated tunnel to navigate through. Along the journey, you’ll meet various foes that need to be vanquished, but considering your present abilities, these enemies shouldn’t prove too formidable.

Pay attention to potential red vases hidden behind wall gaps. In case you encounter obstructions in your path, search the surroundings for an explosive vase that can be detonated to clear a route. At the cave’s end, you will discover a fabled chest, and there may be guards present nearby.

Kofuns In the Yamato Region – One Kofun | Naoe

As a history enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly exploring the fascinating Yamato region, and I’ve come across an intriguing artifact that we haven’t delved into yet – the Ishibutai Kofun. Unlike the Megalithic Vault we discussed earlier, which I had to prioritize due to certain constraints, this one was left for a later visit. You can find it right at the spot indicated on the map image below.

The Ishibutai Kofun is conspicuously located on the map, making it quite accessible. As you advance through the lengthy cave, there’s a lot of exploration or “navigating” involved to reach the end.

Eventually, at the conclusion, you’ll find yourself inside a room housing the mythical treasure chest of this cave. Feel free to unlock it and seize a fresh legendary artifact.

Kofuns In the Kii Region – One Kofun | Yasuke

Lastly, there is a single kofun structure situated within the Kii region where you’ll assume the role of Yasuke. This site is located in the southeastern corner as indicated in the map image below for precise positioning.

Upon entering the kofun, it’s crucial to remember that you must submerge yourself into the water in the first chamber, as your path forward lies beneath. From this point, you simply need to move wooden shelves and explode red vases at obstructed doorways or through gaps in the wall.

In due course, you’ll find yourself at a spot with water beneath and a room further on that’s unreachable by leaping. Swim into the water and proceed to the east, passing through the door that opens to a fresh location.

If you’d prefer, you could head down directly first and emerge at a location that will guide you towards the room located beyond the pit. This room contains a chest filled with an extraordinary item.

Upon emerging, you’ll notice a different red vase situated amid some debris. Clear a path and slide out the wooden shelf for your ascent to the chamber located above. In that upper room, you will discover the fabled chest, which holds a new naginata inside.

At present, those are all the kofuns in the game, excluding the one that Naoe visits as part of the storyline, since you don’t need directions or a guide for it. Now, armed with this information, you can locate the kofuns and collect all the free loot they contain.
